ASP World Tour - Top 3 history

While I anxiously anticipate the final showdown of this year’s ASP World Tour at the Pipe Masters, I’ve been trying to do a bit of number crunching and work out exactly who is likely to go where in the rankings, depending on where they finish at Pipe.  As I mentioned before, the only real remaining races are the race for runner-up and the race to make the top 27.  That has me focused on the number 2 spot for starters.

With my mind going numb from possible results numbers crunching, I decided to take a little break and take a look at who the number 2 guy (and number 3) has been for the past ten years.  From 1997 to 2007, Kelly Slater was in the top 3 a total of seven times.  Of the rest of the guys on the list who are still on tour today, during that same period, Andy Irons was in the top 3 a total of five times; Taj Burrow, a total of three times; Mick Fanning, a total of three times; Joel Parkinson, a total of two times; and one time each for Mick Campbell, CJ Hobgood and Danny Wills.

With Bede Durbidge sitting in 2nd place right now, he’s got a strong chance of maintaining his runner-up position, given his first place finish at Pipe last year.  Taj Burrow, currently in 3rd, has never won in Hawaii, but is only 450 points behind Bede, so has a strong chance of moving into 2nd.  Joel Parkinson is sitting in 4th.  He’s won in Hawaii (Sunset 2002), and he’s a clean 600 points behind Bede, a gap which he’ll look to close up.  CJ Hobgood is in 5th place right now, over 900 points behind Bede.  If the three ahead of him go down early and CJ wins, he could slide up to 2nd place.  Having never won in Hawaii, this outcome is far from likely.  Keep an eye on Bede, Taj and Joel for a battle to the finish.
