The Billabong Pipeline Masters had went into full swing on Tuesday in only the second day of the waiting period for the event. The Pipe event kicked off in the morning in increasing waves, where the swell continued to fill throughout the day. The event is utilizing the new, dual heat format, which will become a fully optional format in 2009. The man on man, winner takes all format features single round eliminations, meaning no losers’ rounds and no second chances.
Round 1 kicked off with a combination of locals, wildcards and bottom ranked World Tour surfers. Hawaiians dominated the round, taking down World Tour surfers, fellow Hawaiians and even a former World Champ. Advancing to Round 2 were World Tour surfers, Danny Wills (AUS) and Aritz Aranburu (EUK), and local Hawaiians, Kamalei Alexander, Jesse Merle-Jones, Ezra Sitt, Tory Barron, David Wassell, Evan Valiere, Jon Jon Florence, Torrey Meister, Jamie O’Brien, Mark Healey, Dusty Payne, , Makua Rothman, Shane Dorian and Marcus Hickman. Bowing out in Round 1 were World Tour surfers, Jay Thompson (AUS), Daniel Ross (AUS), Royden Bryson (ZAF), Ricky Basnett (ZAF), Rodrigo Dornelles (BRA), Jihad Khodr (BRA) and Luke Munro (AUS); former World Champ, Mark Occhilupo (AUS); Hawaiians, TJ Barron, Daniel Jones, Kalani Chapman, Ola Eleogram, Dustin Barca and Nathan Carroll; and wildcards, Manoa Drollet (PYF) and Laurie Towner (AUS).
Round 2 ran through the first eight heats, featuring back to middle of the pack World Tour surfers facing off against the winners from Round 1. Hawaiian locals again dominated the heat, taking five of the eight heats that ran. Advancing to Round 3 were local boys, Kamalei Alexander, Evan Valiere, Jamie O’Brien, Dusty Payne and Ezra Sitt; and World Tour surfers, Chris Ward (USA), Damien Hobgood (USA) and Danny Wills (AUS). Bowing out in Round 2 were World Tour surfers, Miky Picon (FRA), Mick Campbell (AUS), Roy Powers (HAW), Heitor Alves (BRA), Leonardo Neves (BRA) and Dayyan Neve (AUS); and local boys, Tory Barron and Dave Wassell.
The waves are expected to top out by morning, allowing for at least the completion of the second Round before the onshore wind picks up. Round 2 will continue with heat 9 when competition resumes.
