Channel Islands Surfboards released their 2009 board line, and this particular model caught my eye right off the bat. According to Al Merrick, Kelly Slater won’t leave home without it! That being said, you know it’s gotta be golden. “The Pod” is designed for weaker waves, meant to be ridden around 7 inches smaller than your normal shortboard, and the wider, fishy outline makes it friendly for all different levels of surfers. Novice to expert surfers find this shape good for punting airs, so it’s not dragging ass by any means. I see this board as a must if you live in Southern California or anywhere along the East Coast. I’ve always loved these kind of shapes. They’re fast, they’re fun, and the waves have to really, really, suck for you not to be able to find a way to amuse yourself on one of these.
Another shape that caught my eye was the “Tangent”. This board is meant to be ridden when the waves are going off. Just looking at it gives me a chill, and I believe all high performance surfboards should look like a weapon. This board definitely looks like something that you could kill somebody with. Shoot that thing out of a gun, and you could probably kill a buffalo. You can ride this model in your normal dimensions and vary on the different tail shapes. Kelly rode this board in solid surf at Fiji, J-Bay, and Lower Trestles, so you know it moves and fits inside a pocket. I know…I’ve brought up the Kelly thing twice now…but that’s only because Al Merrick and Kelly Slater have been working together on boards A LOT lately. Channel Islands Surfboards are arguably the most popular surfboard in the world, and I find it hard to believe an average surfer would be displeased with any of these models.
