I just got out of the water on a pretty small day today here in San Diego, one of those days where you’re disappointed when you pull up to your local spot, but still go in since you brought your gear and you’re there already anyway.
There have been some good swells lately, so I’ve been dropping in on some bigger waves and I’m addicted to the rush of that drop. Today, however, I experienced slow rollers that definitely surprised me in the pure fun that I had with them. I went back to the basics, practiced my cross-stepping, etc. I had forgotten how delicate each move is on a slow, rolling wave and it was great to work on those basics again.
I think it’s really important to surf in a variety of waves-shape, speed, etc., The need to adjust to different waves will really help your surfing overall. Different breaks will also help in wave identification. Overall, there’s a lot you can learn about your own technique when you break away from your home break.
