On September 26, Firewire Surfboards announced to their retail partners that they will no longer include fins with their surfboards. While this is an unprecedented move in the surfboard industry and is certainly a huge departure from traditional surfboard retail, Firewire has offered a number of valid and selfless reasons for their decision. The change is intended to benefit retailers by allowing for a higher profit margin on Firewire board sales and benefit the customers by lowering the MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price). Basically, it’s supposed to be cheaper for everyone. Firewire also offers the environmental argument of reducing the wasteful production of unwanted fins. They realize that a significant amount of surfboard consumers already have a perfectly good set of fins when purchasing a new board, so why produce fins that nobody wants? Also, retailers often offer a discount on fins when bundled with a surfboard purchase.
This announcement is very recent and is sure to evoke discussion and controversy in the surf retail industry, but Firewire seems genuinely confident that it is an ethical decision and hopes that it will inspire similar practices from other manufacturers. Only time will tell the success of Firewire’s strategy, but until then make sure you have some FCS or Futures fins when you purchase your new Firewire.
