It’s that time again! Tis the season for all you sports nerds and gamblers, and those of you who just like the faux power feel of buying and selling some of the planet’s greatest athletes. With the Billabong Pipeline Masters kicking off on Monday, all bets need to be locked in before the event begins.
So just who should you put your fake dollars on? Over the past ten years, of the guys who are on tour, Bede Durbidge (AUS) won at Pipe last year, Andy Irons won in 2006, 2005, 2003 and 2002, and Kelly Slater won in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999.
As the results show, safe bets for Pipeline include three time World Champ, Andy Irons; nine time World Champ, Kelly Slater; and the white Fijian and current World Tour number two, Bede Durbidge. Kelly would surely love to cap his 9th World Title with a win at Pipe. Bede will be out to defend his 2007 Pipeline Masters crown, as well as his second place finish in this year’s rankings. Andy Irons has been a no show for the past few events, having taken a sabatical from tour. Though AI didn’t competed at Haleiwa or Sunset, we’re getting mixed reports suggesting he may show up for Pipe.
Other guys you might want to consider throwing on your team are the hard charging, left hand barrel loving Floridians, CJ Hobgood and Damien Hobgood. Both have more than proven their skill in surfing heavy conditions and will once again take their fearless goofyfoot approach to Pipe. CJ is frothing after a big win at Sunset and will be sure to give it his all, to up his number in the rankings (currently at number 5 on the World Tour) and take home the Triple Crown win. Other goofyfoots who are solid bets include Bobby Martinez (USA), Ace Buchan (AUS) and Fred Patacchia (HAW). Bruce Irons is also a strong contender, as he has won other events at Pipe and will be sure to want to finish his last year on tour with a win at Pipeline, or as his brother says, “the only place that matters”.
Wildcards and heat seeds have not yet been announced, but keep your eyes and ears open, and finalize your buys and sells before the contest bell dings to life. See you at Pipe.
