Google Maps + Surfing = the end of the surfing world?

…Or is it the just the beginning?

I just happened to stumble into a weird phenomenon - one that I sorta knew would be coming along, and one that, well, frankly, I’ve used myself. It’s Google Maps + surfing, but if you read below, a NEW AND DEADLY TWIST. What it means, I’m not sure just yet.

On a recent trip to Puerto Rico, while looking at driving directions from the airport to *a special little surf spot*, I was flying along in satellite mode, admiring what appeared to be pretty cool lefts breaking around San Juan. Ok, cool. Very useful. Didn’t end up “surfing” over any spots I didn’t know about, but it was still cool. I’ve used it since while at work, wishing I was at Rincon, California.

But today, when surfing around, I found a Google maps widget doohickey thing that purports to list the “World’s Best Surfing Spots”.

Now, it’s not the end of the world that Malibu is listed as one of the world’s great surfing spots. It is, after all, one of the world’s great surfing spots. And finding it on the map is not that big a discovery. I can’t imagine someone showing up to Malibu thinking they’d be “alone.” (I love hate Malibu for that very reason.)

That said, the Stormriders Guides to *LOTS AND LOTS of surfing spots*, be it the North American Guide or the World Guide, are actually great - if only to flip through before going to bed and having sweet dreams of some Costa Rican break that you’ve never surfed.

BUT - I can certainly see the end of the surfing world if every bloody break in the world is listed on some map, for all to see, with a nice little thumb tack leading you to parking-meter free parking, and directions on what path to walk to get to the main peak blah blah blah. So that sucks.

Anyway - SURFING SPOTS ARE SACRED. I was going to put a link to the Google Maps Plug-in that I found. But as with everything else in surfing - you’ll have to figure it out for yourself.
