Hang Loose Pro, Fernando de Noronha - Finals recap

The 2009 Hang Loose Pro has wrapped up on Sunday on the beautiful island of Fernando de Noronha, crowning Brazilian charger and World Tour giant killer, Bruno Santos as the winner.  The 5 star event concluded in head high to overhead crystal clear barrels, making for an exciting end to the competition.

Bruno’s path to victory began in Round 1, where he finished second in his all Brazilian heat to Bernardo Miranda, ousting Rafael Venuto and Raimar Sousa.  He proceeded to win his Round 2 heat, narrowly topping Renato Galvao, and showing the exit to Dunga Neto and Jorge Spanner.  Bruno won again in Round 3, topping Ian Gouveia, and ousting Hizunome Bettero, and then put down Renato Galvao permanently in Round 4.  He handily defeated Ian Gouveia in the Quarterfinals before comboing Marcelo Trekinho in the Semifinals, and comboing last year’s champion, Raoni Monteiro in the Finals.  Though there were only a handful of international surfers in the event, Bruno managed to surf from Round 1 to the Finals without encountering a single one.

The 2000 point haul puts Bruno Santos at the head of the pack, unseating prior WQS leader and current World Tour surfer, Nathaniel Curran (USA), who had taken home 1500 points with his win at the Sebastian Inlet Pro back in January.
