there is usually a perfect spot to be in just in front of the breaking wave

Funny sh!t

His Grandma must have gotten this shot with her Kodak Single Use.

What is boogie boarding really? It’s easy to claim bodyboarding is nothing more than training wheels for the ocean. Something you’re supposed to grow out of, but sometimes people get lost in life, and before you know it you’re a 26 yr old gossip queen. That’s what boogers do… Huddle around in small groups on the inside like cheerleaders excitingly gossiping about what the boys are all wearing, and who they may or may not let feel them up tonight after the big game. Like most other surfers I started out on training wheels until the day came something unexplainable inside me said to stop being a dork, and purchase myself a surfboard. To stand up & be seen. To never again feel ashamed about what’s under your arm when passing another person holding a surfboard. And let’s face it, no chick is picking a boog over a surfer. Don’t get me wrong here… I don’t harbor any hatred for boogies, and I would never run one of them over or anything, that’s absurd. I just don’t understand it as a sport really, and you wouldn’t either if I were to make you eat dinner tonight in a high chair. This is what it feels like to boogie. It’s perfectly fine when you’re still young and learning the ropes, but anything after that only seems humiliating as an adult. No kid wants to eat at the kiddie table forever, and dreams of graduating to the big leagues with Dad.

So where is all this coming from? I was recently asked if bodyboarding has evolved, and my honest to God natural response to this was “Who gives a shit?”

The feeling you get while watching this throw-back Cory Lopez clip should explain this.

  1. I think this sums up spongers quickly and accurately:

  2. Too bad Sigmund Freud isn’t around to take a look at this post. It would be like a goldmine for him. The kid in the picture is stoked! Who cares what he’s riding or thow tood the pic? Or whether his daddy approves? One thing I’m sure of is that 99% of the people on this site would take that barrel on that boogie in a heartbeat. Water looks warm too!
So where does all this come from? Well I SURF just about every day, but sometimes I’ll body surf, kneeboard, or even ride a boogey board to get some closeout barrels. My daughter prefers to boogie board. But there always seems to be some young douchebag who thinks he’s god’s gift to the world, who drops in or paddles around or for whatever reason acts like he is better than everyone else. Seems like this post was written by that guy.
“Stand up and be seen”, “Never feel ashamed again…”, “something unexplainable said to stop being a dork…”, “no chick is picking a boog over a surfer”. Dude, get some therapy! Don’t worry about whether daddy approves, that’s where you got all this baggage in the first place.

  6. of course its a sport, its exercise and fun, just becuase you dont enjoying it, doesnt stop it being a sport.

i despise dog fighting, and think anyone involved in it should be riped apartby their dogs (course the dogs wouldnt do it), but its still a sport, thankfully illegal over here.

and what if someone cant stand up, are you saying all people in wheelchairs are childish?

This is where I “sponge”. I know plenty of guys who charge north shore on a short board when it’s 10 feet (Hawaiian),yet they won’t bodyboard at sandy’s, if its over 3 ft. Im not sure how it is everywhere else, but around here, there is some serious talent (and balls) in among bodyboarders.
