Longboarding Like A Shortboarder
I am a shortboarder. I will admit to being sucked in to the whole longboard vs. shortboard rivalry, having grown up at heavily-longboarded breaks like Swamis and Cardiff Reef and experiencing more than a few frustrating moments as a result. I will also admit to participating in and quite enjoying longboarding myself. Furthermore, I will admit to having great respect and even envy for those that are exceptionally good at longbooarding, but only those that longboard like longboarders.
I have found all too often these days, especially in the current grom generation, that many people attempt to ride longboards as if they were shortboards: dropping in late, hitting the lip, doing roundhouses - while altogether neglecting the maneuvers which separate longboarding from shortboarding and define longboarding as a style: smooth fades, drop-knee bottom turns, walking the nose. I’m sure that advancing surfboard technologies are contributing to this trend by providing longboards that are buoyant to catch anything that rolls while being light enough to maneuver at will, essentially making them cheating shortboarders. To all you true longboarders, please don’t follow this trend. Take pride in the aesthetic that makes your craft beautiful and unique - longboard like a longboarder. If you want to hit the lip, buy a shortboard.

thats so true, I’m a traditional longboarder and it almost makes me feel sick when i see people my age sort of crossing the two. longboarding is an act of subtlety and seeing people throw their boards vertical backwards upside down and any imaginable possible direction, longboarding immendiatly loses it’s beauty and seperation from shortboard surfing.
Please if your one of these ‘modern-age progressive surfers’ use a shortboard, longboarding just isn’t for that.
Sounds like you old farts are too fat and out of shape to actually SURF your paddleboard. There’s no beauty, subtle or otherwise in seeing some slow poke grandpa on a 14ft paddleboard. The old fart can catch waves but then can NOT do anything on the wave except stand there like a statue and cruise, slowly. So you see the truth is that all of you kooks are jealous when you see someone actually handling a longboard like a talented surfer as oppsed to all of you fat old POSERS.
or you could just surf how you feel like surfing at that moment in time cos lets be honest who gives a fuk wat anyone else thinks as long as you are enjoyin yourself!
