Michel Bourez - second ever Tahitian World Tour surfer

Making good on my earlier suggestion, Tahiti’s Michel Bourez has officially taken home a seat on the 2009 ASP World Tour.  This accomplishment puts Michel in the record books as the second Tahitian ever to qualify for the big leagues.  Over ten years have passed since the first and last Tahitian pro, Vetea “Poto” David spent eleven years on the World Tour, from 1986 to 1997.  Following in Poto’s footsteps, Michel will now test his talents against the world’s top 45 on next year’s World Tour.  He’s already proven his ability, having disposed of then two World Champs as a wildcard in the 2007 Quiksilver Pro France.  He furthered that by taking out Joel Parkinson, Bede Durbidge and Kieren Perrow in the 2008 Quiksilver Pro France.

As he said in the video above, Michel feels Hawaii is the place to be if you’re a surfer, and he just wants to surf as good as he can.  He lived his words on Saturday with his insane barrel riding and no fear approach to any section that came his way.  He’s proven that he’s deadly in heaving barrels, with his Tahitian upbringing, but his bag of tricks adds to his abilty to win heats regardless of the conditions.  Michel Bourez has earned his seat on the 2009 World Tour, and I think he’ll maintain his spot on tour for years to come.   Welcome to the big leagues, Michel!
