MR Pro kicking off on Wednesday
The 2009 MR Pro kicks off this Wednesday at Merewether beach in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The 2 Star event follows the Arnette Pro Junior, which wrapped up there on Sunday. The contest, in its 25th year, is run as part of the Newcastle Surfest, which was first won by three time World Champ, Tom Curren back in 1985.
The Mark Richards Pro commemorates the contributions four-time World Champ Mark Richards has made to the sport of surfing. MR continues to live across the street from Merewether beach, where he launched his professional surfing career.
Over the years, the event has been won by the likes of nine time World Champ, Kelly Slater (USA), and several other former World Champs, including Mark Occhilupo (AUS), Tom Carroll (AUS), Mick Fanning (AUS), Damien Hardman (AUS) and Barton Lynch (AUS), and a host of other top notch surfers, such as Adriano de Souza (BRA), Dayyan Neve (AUS), Mick Campbell (AUS), Shane Powell (AUS), Taylor Knox (USA), and others.
The event will feature a wide array of professional surfers and local talents, including a number of World Tour surfers who have turned out for the event following the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.
