MR Pro - Thursday recap

The 2009 MR Pro at Merewether beach in Newcastle, NSW, Australia jumped right into Round 3 on Thursday, after completing the first two rounds of competition on the opening day of the event. The 2 Star WQS event saw an excellent day of waves on Wednesday, setting up the stage for the higher seeded Round 3 heats for Thursday.

Thursday saw the completion of all of Round 3 and the start of Round 4, before competition went on hiatus to allow the women to run their Round 1 heats.  Standout performances on Thursday included Tahitian star, Tamaroa McComb’s win over Dane Durbin of Australia, who he left in a combo situation; Blake Ainsworth, who also comboed his competition by taking down fellow Aussie, James “Taipan” Woods; Jayke Sharp, who posted a convincing win over fellow Aussie, Ashley King; Australia’s Noah Lane, who comboed Osawa Nobuyuki of Japan; and South Africa’s World Tour veteran, Travis Logie, who handily defeated local Aussie, Dallas Peterson.

Early exits were had by Hawaii’s Granger Larson, who won the Junior event earlier this week; young Indonesian ripper, Garut Widiarta; and James Athorn, who lost a hard fought heat by mere tenths of a point to fellow Aussie, Sam Lendrum.

When competition resumes, the action will pick up again with Round 4, where we’ll see more big seeds hitting the water.  Check out the event website for updates, photos, videos, heat sheets and all the live action.
