Dolphins have always been regarded as a surfer’s best friend because they keep the sharks away, and their presence always makes you smile. It’s cool to see them out there with you, and whatever you were busy thinking about will quickly melt away when a dolphin’s around. This particular dolphin’s name is Moko, and she’s got quite a reputation going. She’s made Mahia Beach her home now for about two years, and she’s really pushing the human interaction. Moko started bringing fish to people on a regular basis, and also stealing all their play toys, never to been seen again.
“She has actually been bringing fish to people. People have had kahawai and gurnard brought to them and some lucky people have had her bring them seahorses.”
It’s like your dog bringing back a stick to you, but this time that stick’s a fish. People have actually started riding her, and she’s got the fingernail & jewelry scars to prove it.
“We are a bit concerned that some people are getting into rough play with her - they jump on her back or grab her dorsal fin.”
They’re quick to point out she’s not a little kitten…
“She can play rough right back - she’s a big, powerful animal, she probably weighs 150 kilograms. She could damage someone.”
I’ve never heard of a dolphin doing things like this unless I’m drinking free beer at SeaWorld. Do they still do that there? I haven’t been back in years. They had a little brewery thing in there, and they gave away free samples. I just went to a different line each time, and you can get like three or four beers for free. Buy one more and you’re in business! Anyhoo, this dolphin, Moko, has got a reputation going and hopefully SeaWorld doesn’t catch wind of it and try to snake her a show. She’ll swim right up the beach and play with all the kids. Notice how she took the boogieboard? Yeah, grown men shouldn’t play with toys.
Some dolphins charging Jeffery’s Bay…
This one really likes you…
