Craigslist always seems to turn up crazy examples of ridiculous surfing consumerism. Be it beer and surfing ads, ads for soap from the 60s or even that crazy Channel ad where the models are carrying 9′6″ logs - there’s always examples out there. This one is no different - with some guy sellnig a way, way overpriced fun shape thingy for $600, complete with “ankle strap” and Disney Board bag. (It’s probably pink, with Mickey or Minnie shredding on it…). The ad goes on to say that “It is Designed by a company named Surftech and is fiberglass.” Um, no, no it’s not. Ok, now that I’m done ragging on Disney and all things pretty, it actually looks like pretty cool surfboard art. Not quite surfboard porn, but cool enough. Just don’t let anyone get close enough to see that’s it’s signed by Walt and has pictures of Epcot on one side…

The board actually has a red stripe that runs down the center, and an oriental dragon at the tip. It was made and distributed by Surftech, and sold at the Disney Store. It originally sold for $1000.00 a the store, and ended up on sale for $99.00. Yes 90% off the original price. There were two models, the one shown above and a tinkerbell version. You could use it as a surfboard, but they look better as decoration. If you google the board I’m sure you’ll find a image of the back side. My brother in-law looked at it and said it was not a bad board for $100.00. Just a carrying bag can cost $50, so the whole set for $100.00 is pretty good for somebody who is looking to start surfing. They were averaging $300-$400 on ebay.
I have the tink and pirates boards as an investment. Surftech is a well known company who produces epoxy boards. The graphics alone on the boards are a 4 step process which would cost you an arm and a leg to reproduce, it was done very well also. The shape is a fun board, hybrid type board. Its shape is actually very nice for beginners to advanced surfers. I only have surfed for 48 years and really what do i know? Just that anyone who goes to a Disney store is not in the market for a surfboard, let alone a thousand dollar one. at 300 to 400 dollars it’s a steal. If you have the BALLS to ride a tinkerbell surfboard! The pirates one could be ridden by whomever, but still you need to at least surf to hold your own.
BLY
“not a bad board for $100″?? When’s the last time anyone saw a new surfboard of any kind for $100?? This Surftech 7′2″ fun board sells for close to $650 at Beckers. Well - I liked the Pirates graphics so much on this board - i bought it today to hang on my wall. It is beautiful - and not a bad price for any new surfboard with bag and leash. Yah - and the graphics would probably cost a few hundred to add to a custom board if you could find an artist this good.
I paid $400 for my Pirates wall hanger. Its a steal at that price.
