After Slater’s devastating loss and contest exit on Sunday afternoon, the rest of the field of competitors at the 2009 Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast, presented by LG Mobile scrambled for wins at Snapper Rocks, to build an early season lead on the reigning World Champ.
Picking up in the middle of Round 3, the action kicked off to a smashing start as heat 8 hit the water on Monday morning with number two in the world, Bede Durbidge shutting down event injury replacement wildcard, Jay Thompson (AUS), who entered the event as a stand-in for Luke Stedman (AUS) who sat out the event for the birth of his child. Crowd pleasing sophomores continued to excite, with Jordy Smith (ZAF) ousting Taylor Knox (USA), and Dane Reynolds (USA) doing some of his trademark mindblowing surfing to defeat Hawaii’s Roy Powers.
Tour front-runners put on a strong show, with top Brazilian, Adriano de Souza taking down South Africa’s Greg Emslie, and top West Oz surfer, Taj Burrow showing Drew Courtney (AUS) the exit. Tom Whitaker (AUS) narrowly defeated South Africa’s David Weare, and goofyfooters also fought their way into Round 4 on Monday, including Fred Patacchia (HAW), who took out Josh Kerr (AUS), and Ace Buchan (AUS) who defeated rookie Fronchie, Tim Boal.
