Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast - Round 1 wrap
The Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast, presented by LG Mobile got off to a smashing start on Saturday in the nearby Duranbah on the Queensland/New South Wales border. Day 1 was held in rippable, peaky, waist to chest high waves, with a slight cross chop that came up as the heats progressed. The event went on hold, taking a lay day on Sunday, but will resume once the swell picks back up.
World Tour rankings leaders and newbies alike, put on a tremendous show on the opening day of competition. The old standard, 3 man heats were surfed in Round 1, putting the winners of each heat straight through to Round 3, while sending second and third place surfers on to duke it out in the man-on-man heats of Round 2.
Winning straight through to their Round 3 heats were an amazingly in form Kelly Slater, who dominated his heat on a self-shaped 5′4″; Portuguese wonder, Tiago Pires; 2007 World Champ and top Cooly kid, Mick Fanning; top Brazilian, Adriano de Souza; fellow Brazo, Heitor Alves, who won an all goofyfoot heat; Floridian wonder twin, Damien Hobgood; injury replacement wildcard, Aussie Jay “Bottle” Thompson, who topped Cooly kid, Joel Parkinson; top Fronchie, Jeremy Flores; Aussie wildcard and Young Gun, Julian Wilson, who took down world number two, Bede Durbidge; West OZ flyboy, Taj Burrow; rookie Fronchie, Tim Boal; returning Saffa veteran, Greg Emslie; Aussie, Nic Muscroft; Hawaiian rookie, Kekoa Bacalso; returning Aussie veteran, Josh Kerr; and Aussie, Kieren Perrow.
