The WQS 6 Star Prime Reef Hawaiian Pro wrapped up on Saturday in chest high to slightly overhead waves in Haleiwa. Tahitian superstar, Michel Bourez took home top honors, taking down a field of frothing competitors and locking in his spot on the 2009 World Tour.
Picking up this morning with heat 14, Round 4, the day got off to a great start with a bit of good ol’ World Tour surfer dominance, seeing the advance of Dayyan Neve (AUS), Chris Ward (USA), Jordy Smith (ZAF), Rodrigo Dornelles (BRA) and Joel Parkinson (AUS), and the young Brazilian star, Wiggolly Dantas.
Surviving Round 5 were World Tour surfers, Nic Muscroft (AUS), Kieren Perrow (AUS), Jihad Khodr (BRA), Bede Durbidge (AUS), Tim Reyes (USA), Dayyan Neve (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Chris Ward (USA); former World Tour surfers, Sunny Garcia (HAW) and Greg Emslie (ZAF); top WQS surfers, Brett Simpson (USA), Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), Michel Bourez (PYF) and Dustin Barca (HAW); and local Hawaiians, Evan Valiere and Dusty Payne.
Making it through the Quarterfinals were Jihad Khodr (BRA), Joel Parkinson (AUS), Nic Muscroft (AUS) and Bede Durbidge (AUS); top WQS surfers, Brett Simpson (USA), Kekoa Bacalso (HAW) and Michel Bourez (PYF); and young Hawaiian standout, Dusty Payne.
Sneaking through the Semifinal number 1 were Michel Bourez and Kekoa Bacalso in what was a non-stop barrel fest. Semifinal number 2 was a horror show for the surfers in the water, with a two wave score of 4.83 out of 20 winning the heat. World Tour surfer, Jihad Khodr (BRA) and young Hawaiian star, Dusty Payne, truly lucked their way through a heat that was completely devoid of waves.
The Final proved much more exciting with a return of more set waves allowing the remaining four surfers ample opportunity to post high scores. Dusty Payne (HAW) went out in 4th, having not locked in a single relevant wave. Kekoa Bacalso put in a stellar performance and came in 3rd with a 15.83 out of 20. Jihad Khodr posted big scores to take second place with a 16.50 out of 20. Tahitian dream, Michel Bourez weaved his way through barrels and turns to post a 16.77 out of 20, taking the win and a ticket to the big leagues.
