‘Save Trestles’ Hearing A Success!

On Monday, September 22, a public hearing was held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego regarding the California Coastal Commission’s decision to protect San Onofre State Park.  Representatives from the Federal Department of Commerce heard testimony from a variety of speakers.  Everyone from elected officials, organization leaders, concerned members of the general public stood at the podiums to speak for and against the proposed Hwy. 241 toll road, which is meant to be built directly through the heart of the San Mateo Creek bed - the lifeblood of Trestles.

The 241 toll road is conceived to decrease traffic between San Diego and Orange County by connecting the I-5 eastward from San Clemente to Riverside.  Not only would this project destroy the creek bed that created and preserves the world-class surf breaks at Churches, Uppers, Lowers and Cottons, but it would funnel all of inland Orange County directly to the beach at Trestles, further crowding an already crowded spot.

Surfers, environmentalists and other eco-conscious civilians showed up in droves sporting green ‘Stop The Toll Road’ shirts provided by the Surfrider Foundation. Orange shirts proclaiming ‘Hwy. 241 – It’s All Good!’ were worn by a lackluster crowd of union workers that were paid $15/hr. to attend the rally in order to avoid an embarrassingly low pro-toll road turnout. In the end a great showing was made for a beloved surf spot, but the fate of Trestles still lies in the balance. The Secretary of Commerce is expected to make a decision by late fall, you can affect the decision.
