Surfers all a Twitter

It is inescapable. Even for professional surfers.

The migration away from large media conglomerates received another proverbial nail in its collective coffin when Ashton Kutcher beat CNN to the millionth follower on Twitter. Not to be blown into irrelevance by the winds of time, pro surfers have begun tweeting as well.

The pro surfing lineup on twitter is small, but will surely grow as more and more people migrate to twitter looking for ways to simulate some sort of closeness with celebrities and friends alike.

Bobby Martinez (Bobby805) on Twitter since April 29th is getting his tweets wet. Five of those tweets concern eating food, planning to eat food, or already having eaten food. The following gem is illustrative: “went to the parents house for taco’s. mom cooked up a storm. cookies and brownies. nephews can over and teared up the house.” It is easy to see what Bobby finds important.

Mick Fanning (Mick_Fanning) easily dominates the Twitter circuit with three or four tweets a day since March 3rd. Mick is also at the top of his class with the most followers: 1,668. His posts tend toward the very intimate, “I have to go to the toilet so bad and the toilet on the train is out of order. I could get embarrassed soon…” This kind of intimacy clearly indicates that Mick is doing his own tweeting and hasn’t hired a ghost writer to do his tweeting for him.

Parko (joelparko) tweets to 1,268 followers about the surf, new tattoos, and fishing excursions. He provides useful information about the boards he rides, and Australian holidays, “Thank god for the ones who gave their lives so we could have better ones. Happy anzac day.”

The Hobgoods (hobgoods) are all over Twitter. They’ve been at it since July 28, 2008 and have a separate account set up just for their pictures (thegoodsbros). With both Damien and CJ tweeting an almost indigestible amount of information is thrown into the cyberweb; a lot of the tweets nearly indecipherable: “CJ/baguettes 4 days; dolphin rueben; Damo/jump around.”

Rounding out the pro surfer tweet circuit is Slater himself (slater9). Although new to twitter, I am sure that he will find a way to tweet his way into the winners circle. His ten tweets are terse and direct, and with a little practice and time, he’ll be as fluid and comfortable as he is on a surfboard.

  1. ugh, really can we go back to the days of the rotary telephone? As much as I am guilty of messageboard posting, this twitter thing has really brought back the mentality of the 80’s (me me me me) to a new level. I mean seriously I was at a party on sunday where people were talking about someone “twittering” in real life conversation. Someone needs to pull a Tyler Durden before Skynet becomes self aware and we all perish in our own feces and blogs…not much difference between the two.

  2. You forgot the most active surfer twitterer… Jamie O Brien (whoisjob).
Be forewarned, his updates are certainly not politically correct.
