The first thing that comes to mind when you see the Toyota Prius is that there is no way you’re going to put your surfboards on the roof without a Yakima or Thule rack. (Or that you’re every going to buy one, for that matter.) The angle and shape of the roof is just too weird, and that’s about the only real knock on using a Toyota Prius as your surfing transportation solution (other than the fact that a lot of people (like me) think it’s preppy, yuppy and ugly). That, and there’s a waiting list of several decades to get these hyper-fuel efficient hybrid cars. Oh and the price starts at around $22,000.
It IS a bit of a pain that you can’t just strap and roll without a rack, particularly if you find surfboard racks to be kind of ugly, and perhaps even more so on a Prius. I like the idea of rolling around in just my car some days, rather than rolling around in a car that looks like it is a twelve year old weakling sporting braces. For whatever reason, surfboard roof racks look fine on the Toyota Yaris, Corolla or Honda Fit, but the angle of the roof makes for a weird roof rack configuration on the Prius. Nuff said.
But, the good news is that, unless your a logger, you’ll have able room to fit some boards in the back, because the 4 door Prius’ rear seats fold down leaving you with tons of space. One intrepid Yuppie, whose vehicle is pictured here, was able to fit not one, but two boards in the car. The second board appears to be a tiny little stick, whereas the board on top looks to be about 7′ +.
We at DailyStoke.com feel kinda stoked about the Prius as your surfing transportation method.
That said, the best part about using the Prius is that you’ll be able to proudly stick put your Surfrider Foundation sticker on the bumper of this puppy. Right above that little leaf thing that says your car is a hybrid-electric surfing machine!

I must say this is a great article i enjoyed reading it keep the good work
Priuses are indeed good rides for the beach. My dad has one of the blue ones and got a Thule rack for it since you do have less room, far less than an SUV obviously.
Pretty funny you call it a yuppy ride
pretty true
Give it a year or two and a couple dents, then it will look tougher.
