Surfing Rules and Surfing Etiquette Signs

At my local beach break, there are no surfing etiquette signs, and it shows. Today, I was dropped in on by about 5 people, even though I whistled, occupied the corner and let other pulses slip past to clear out the masses. A sign is needed. I have three pet peeves, and I’d bet you share them:

1 - Dropping in

2 - Snaking

3 - Being in, or standing in, the takeoff zone.

Not that you needed reminding, but here are some nice little surfing etiquette or surfing rules signs. They all kinda say the same thing. What a coincidence! It would be really easy just to put this together…Hmm, maybe I should.

This one, tho, is my absolute favorite. LOCAL ONLY!

  1. There needs to be a caveat for the one local guy that takes every single wave no matter what because he’s been surfing here since 1812, and blah, blah, blah………Even despite the fact that you surf better than him.

  2. The problem is most people don’t read the signs.

  3. I love this local BS. It’s such a trip to hear such bad asses defend local breaks. I understand it sucks gettin some kook droppin in on u, but don’t act like u own a break. I just got back from New Zealand and was refreshing not having some fake bad ass choking the line-up. Ill tolerate localism until I have to hear it inside …. than It’s time to shut that mouth up. I have no issue seeing new bodies fillin my break…just don’t be a jackass.

  4. omg! totally, whats UP with grinning grampa local plowing through the patient crowd to get every break?! I practice etiquette till I’m blue in the friggin face and freezin my ass off waiting; please teach the old fellas a few new tricks.

I leave the kooks to the aggro locals until my deck gets dinged, but honestly I don’t think any newb gets it until they’ve been dropped in on 1000 times, himself.
