The effect of women in the surfing lineup
I’m probably going to chatch sh!t from Hot Wahine or Julia is Stoked for this, but what-EEVVVer! Women, girls, female surfers, surfer chicks (or just surfers, I guess) in the lineup have an interesting effect on the lineup, largely because where I surf, for every girl, there are ten guys. The effect is that guys generally stop peak hoping, dropping in, glaring, yelling or otherwise bitch at each other. I think this is because the girls have a calming effect on the other surfers. You’re not going to yell and swear at other surfers if a girl is next to you. You might call out a kook from time to time, but even in that case you’ll do it politely. When I surf, it’s not that there’s a ton of testosterone in the water, it’s just that there’s more of a feeling of “every man for himself”. That leads to getting dropped in on more frequently than not. In any event, the effect is positive I think. Guy surfers should recruit more girl surfers. Dudes, bring your girlfriends!

Yeah, that’s fair enough. And a nice sentiment. But women can be just as aggressive, mean and selfish as the guys. At least, where I surf they can be. At some of the breaks I surf, there’s often almost as many women as men in the water. And let me tell you, women aren’t always about sweetness, softness and being the bringers of better behavious - they’re not your mothers. And I generally haven’t found that there is more of a spirit of generosity when I surf. In fact, I find if I’m not assertive and taking things on, then I’m unlikely to get any waves at all. Women have to surf and prove themselves, just like men. They don’t just sit around mulling over the wonder of the ocean and smiling.
I’m not totally disagreeing with you Surfing HQ - it certainly can make a difference to the lineup if there’s a woman involved - but it doesn’t always mean it’s positive either.
After all, women are just surfers too.
