Pro Surfing and Contests

The Kelly Slater and Andy Irons show - or why two of the world’s winningest champs showed up for Pipe at the last minute

Forget their storied history.  Forget the viscious competitions and title fights.  Forget the harsh words they’ve had for one another (though admittedly, way more vitriol seemed to come from Andy’s camp).  Andy and Kelly are two of the greatest surfers, ever.

They are two of the world’s winningest champions, taking down more titles and contests and prize money between them than any other two professional surfers, dead or alive.  Andy is only surpassed by a handful of men and women in his 3 World Titles, while Kelly’s 9th World Title is the stuff of legends, putting him up there with the Tiger Woods and Michael Jordins of this world.

So what sparked the hostilities between these two champs?  Seems like it comes down to two natural born winners, who can’t take losing.  Put two alpha dogs in the same room, you’re bound to see a bit of blood shed.  For all the hype surrounding it, Slater told us in person a few months back that “all of the bad feelings are now squashed”.

This Transworld trip posted our two humble champs, half a dozen photographers, and an interviewer extraordinaire in the Mentawais for what they are calling “the surf trip of the decade”.  Check out the slideshow above and tune in to Transword to see the results.
