With between 10 and 12 contests in a given ASP World Tour season, and with weeks and months between contests, what do the world’s top 45 do in their down time?
The fact is, these guys have more time off, than time in contests and transit. Some, like Jihad Khodr, double down, competing in every major WQS contest they can, to make sure they don’t accidentally get bumped off tour. Some, like the Hobgoods, take a stab at WQS events to show that they can still kick ass where it counts. Some, like the new breed of super surfers, such as Jordy Smith and Jeremy Flores, supplement their contest practice with insane workouts. Some, like Taj Burrow and Andy Irons, take the down time to see their significant others, surf with mates and travel for video shoots, often doing all three at the same time. Some, like Mick Fanning, Pancho Sullivan and Taylor Knox, do promotional tours for their sponsors, as these three guys did in the recent “Right Coast Raid”, where they toured up and down the East Coast of the U.S., promoting their team and meeting fans.
I’ll take their contests, travels and downtime any day over team deskrider.
