Transworld’s story of the decade – Slater & Irons – leaves off with an interesting cliffhanger

In the TrannyWorld article documenting the much hyped Kelly Slater and Andy Irons “Fly in the Champagne” trip, everyone’s favorite action sports announcer, Sal Masekela, leaves off with an interesting cliffhanger of an ending. Sal suggests, “People wonder what it will take to keep Kelly on tour. I say a truly focused Andy Irons.”

As we all know now, Andy has officially taken the year off in 2009, taking a much needed sabbatical to revive his competitive spark. And, as we also now know, Kelly Slater bowed out early in the first competition of the year, taking an equal 17th after falling to wildcard, Julian Wilson in Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast. Where was Andy Irons? Sabbatical. Could he really be part of the momentum that has driven Slater’s resurgence and several title wins? Unlikely, but possible. We’re going to see how Kelly does at some of the next few contests to see if this was a fluke or something more. It would be quite interesting to see Slater have a bad year on tour in 2009 (not that I or any other fans want this), only to come back strong in 2010, when Andy gets back on tour. As Sal Masekela said in closing, “Time will tell”.
