Upsets abound in rounds 2 and 3 of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay

Holy shit, bru! You see that?!? J Bay was absolutely on fire on Tuesday for the second day of the 2009 Billabong Pro. The boys logged a few perfect 10 rides, and many more in the excellent range.

King Kelly Slater was on again at J Bay, turning out the highest heat score of the day with his 18.84 to 9.34 victory over Australia’s Nic Muscroft. Dominating the inside barrel section, Slater was virtually unstoppable, posting a 9.57 and a 9.27, and finishing his heat with an additional two throw-out waves over 9.0.

Current number one, Joel Parkinson continued his winning ways at Jeffreys, with two high point heat wins on Tuesday. Parko destroyed Aussie wildcard Heath Joske in round 2, then rolled over Kieren Perrow in round 3, logging a 10 point ride and posting a heat total of 18.50.

California rookie, Nathan Curran caused a Brazilian economic meltdown when he took out Adriano de Souza in round 2. Unfortunately for Nathan, he wasn’t able to back up that result, with Australia’s Dean Morrison leaving him in combo-land in round 3.

South African wildcard Sean Holmes has been a real show stealer. In round 1, he posted a solid win over Hawaiian rookie Dustin Barca; in round 2, he caused a huge upset by comboing Taj Burrow, and in round 3, he took down Australia’s Mick Campbell.

Tahitian rookie Michel Bourez brought another major upset when he took down Mick Fanning in their second round match-up. Bourez ousted Basque surfer Aritz Aranburu in round 1, and will meet up with California’s Dane Reynolds in round 3, when action resumes.

Speaking of Dane, he topped Saffa front-runner and fellow sophomore, Jordy Smith in what will likely be one of the heats of the year. After posting lackluster results in the last few events, Dane has finally hit his stride in South Africa. Wednesday will tell whether the world’s “best” surfer can continue his momentum when he is matched up against the Tahitian rookie.

  1. Enough with the King Kelly flatulence. He got smoked SMOKED by TKnox. . . SMOKED!!!

Just give it to Parko already. Clearly the best surfer in the world.
