Surf Video Games can improve your surfing skills

Over the holiday break I managed to catch a cold and was stuck in the house for a few days. This gave me the opportunity to get re-acquainted with my gaming console and my favorite games - Transworld Surf for Xbox and Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfing. I am not a video game guy at all and am still running an original Xbox but it gets the job done. I own both the Kelly Slater and Transworld versions and although a bit different, they both depict the sport well. I found that playing really helped illustrate certain mechanics that I have been trying to improve on and because the characters are modeled after the pros, you can see how they use different techniques. From duck diving to finding the best spot on the wave to generate speed, you can really get a good feel for it all. Also, having control of a player from a third party perspective just opens your eyes to new things you may not have noticed. Although, some of the tricks and airs may be a bit much, the basics are there and I have personally taken a lot away from it. They haven’t come out with any new versions of either which is a shame but go get the old ones and give them a try on the next flat day…I bet you’ll see a difference the next time you hit the water!

  1. I’ve played kelly slaters pro surfer so much (on the ps2) because im just craving surf. Not to brag, but I’ve played so much I feel like I actually have ’style’ in the video game. I rarely throw airs just because it’s so unrealistic. I usually play with Kelly, and my favorite map is Bells (bells night is cool also) just because it feels the most realistic. Next is j-bay in terms of realism. All the other rights are just too big, too slow, or too unrealistic. But at Bell’s Beach, if you practice getting far out on your bottom turns, can do some really sick top carves. Ahhh, no swell, 805 sucks in 09. AHHH

  2. Oh also, I wish they did a new surf game. Kelly Slater’s pro surfer came out in like 2001 or something? It’s been EIGHT YEARS, imagine what they could do now. Better graphics, better mechanics, more content.

  4. Have you ever played Skate or Skate 2? A surfing game could SOOO be made off of the same type of gameplay. Listen, the reason no good surfing games are out is b/c no one can make a good one. No one wants to play a stupid game where you do flips over sharks or collect coins. Invent a game where you can pick REAL breaks all over the world and surf in any type of real situation. 3-4 foot beach break clean with offshores, or cross-shores and chopped up. It’d be so much fun to try to make a section instead of having nothing but clean wave in front of you throughout the whole game. Clean waves would get boring all the time on a video game. I don’t know if you would want to get involved with tow surfing or not in a game, but it’s a viable option. You could have a button to pump, but most of your speed and fun would be free surfing and going up and down the the face of tghe wave. Also, you should be able to do surf competitions, do the WCT tour, or freesurf if you want. Someone PLEASE MAKE A GOOD SURFING GAME!!!!

  5. they need to make a surfing video game where u can create a surfer and try to make the CT and stuff, and have hundreds of surf spots, not just a few, and being able to paddle around instead of being stuck in the same spot is cool too

  6. they should make a game were you make your own charachter based off yourself and you start like in florida or jersey or some shit with a crappy beat board and you have to work your way up the ladder and buy new boards and get new cribs on the north shore and in france and oz and shit and go on all this surf trips and send in videos of “yourself” to in game sponsers kinda like tony hawks underground and go from complete kook to complete pro ripper

  7. They need to make a surf game when u live on the beach and its like a storyline, there is a clock, a day and a night, and the waves are different every day, and like other posts say u should be able to create ur surfer and board, and pretty much be a beach bum. To be able to use a shortboard or a fish or a funboard or hell a longboard. just to have all of those options would make a new surf game amazing. PLEASE MAKE A SURF GAME!!!

  10. I completely agree, and i have been waiting sooooo long for someone to bring this up!!!!!!!!!
When i watch people in the game do certain tricks, i subconcously pick up the motion and movements in my brain, and the next time i hit the water, i can do tricks that i never knew that i could ever do!!!! Its so wierd, but its pretty cool how our brains pick up on things.

  11. i have been waiting sooo effing long for a new surf game and the brain thing is true. When I was playing skate and skate 2 i would watch the tricks my guy did and it would help me learn tricks in real life.
