Damien and CJ Hobgood have a triplet in Hollywood

cj-hobgood-headshot

We're all familiar with Florida's most famous set of surfing twins, but who knew that they were actually triplets? I sure as shit didn't. A while back, I stumbled across the fellow in the photo below, Ryan Kwanten, who plays one of the main characters, Jason Stackhouse on HBO's uber-popular show, True Blood. Yeah... I watch it.  How can you turn down all that gratuitous female nudity? Anywho... I now know the Hobgoods were hiding away a third identical brother. Check the guy out and let … [Read more...]

A look at the “One Ranking” system – decoding CJ Hobgood’s lead

one-ranking-system

With the "one ranking" system slowly creeping up on us, CJ Hobgood has taken down the first major event of 2010, and has shot to first in the world under the coming system.  But what does it all mean?  Let's take a look. ****** It's all in the Stars ****** CJ's win in the 6 Star Prime Hang Loose Pro has awarded him 6,500 points.  By comparison, Heitor Alves win at the 6 Star Maresia Ceara Surf International only scored him 3,000 points, and Jamie O'Brien's recent win at the 5 Star Volcom … [Read more...]

mick-fanning-2009-world-champ

After a few exciting days of competition at the 2009 Billabong Pipeline Masters, we've crowned our 2009 World Champ (Mick Fanning), closed in on our 2009 Vans Triple Crown Champ (CJ Hobgood or Joel Parkinson), finalized our rookie rankings (seeing Kekoa Bacalso at the head of the 2009 pack), and seen a huge number of dreams crushed and hopes dashed.  Let's explore the latter. Before the event has even finished, we can say goodbye to: - Marlon Lipke - who missed this event due to injury and … [Read more...]

2009 ASP World Tour rankings following Parko’s win in South Africa

joel-parkinson-j-bay

Australia’s Joel Parkinson does it once again, taking his third win of the year and proving to all that 2009 is his year. Now even more solidly in the lead, by some 1400 plus points, Parko’s widening the gap on his way to his very first world title. While Kelly Slater looked poised to strike coming off of his win in Brazil and taking the highest heat score of the day in his round 2 heat, he bowed out in to California’s Taylor Knox in round 3, unable to get any solid waves. On a positive … [Read more...]

Dooooooowntime for WCT Tour Surfers

flats-dog2

What to do, what to do...Surfers like to fish, and surfers in Florida have more than enough of time to hunt gills while they wait for some waves to show up. The Hobgood twins recently got their hands on one of these paddle board, fishing vessel-type things, and from the looks of things they're putting it to use. Or it's just a photo opp for the website, and you can check that out by clicking here. The Flatstalker looks pretty worthless to me, and you're going to need some basic balancing skills to … [Read more...]

It’s easy to see why… retro board revolution

"The times they are a-telling, and the changing isn't free"- A 6'1 or a 6'2 used to be a popular surfboard size, shiiiit, those days are over. It's all about 1984 now, and 5 foot something surfboards are what you want to be riding. This is a clip of Shayne McIntyre ripping on a little 5'8" Rusty Quad. His new "go-to" board. It's easy to see why, because that thing looks fun as hell. Just when I was getting syked on all the cool longboarding I've been seeing from the RVCA guys, I come across this. … [Read more...]

Clifton James surfers better than you.

passport-pic2

In case any one's wondering what "CJ" stands for... Yes, it's affirmative. We've had a surfing world champion by the name of "Clifton James", and not only that, but Clifton's one of the most charging/best air guys on tour. It's a little silly, because Clifton James is like the last possible name you would ever put to a person so involved in the ocean. A cast member in Patrick Swayze's 1989 movie "Next of Kin", most definitely. A world champion surfer, unlikely. Current passport scan courtesy of … [Read more...]

Soulcam: the next big step in filmmaking

fdgdgfdg

CJ Hobgood brought this to my attention on his personal blog, and it's gotta be one of the more beautiful filmmaking processes I've ever seen. The "Soucam" is basically a camera attached on to a blimp, and under the right controls it can draw out some of the most beautiful lines you'll ever see. Naturally, everything is shot from up above, but with the proper music playing and the way the ocean seems to always chase you, it's like the most soothing/alluring thing a surf film could ever be. I need … [Read more...]

Aaron Cormican graces the cover of Eastern Surf Magazine

cover134index2

Aaron Cormican is on the cover of Eastern Surf Magazine. Aaron is known for boosting airs, and it comes as no surprise to anyone who recognizes his name to see this grab. There's no need to even finish out the sequence, because of course he pulled it. Cormican does these things that make the rest of us look like we use plastic shopping bags over our feet to get through the leg of a wetsuit. No I'm kidding, but remember that trick? I know I'm not the only one. There was a time when getting in a full … [Read more...]

Enough is enough! Another fatal shark attack in South Africa

tigershark1

A 25 year old lifeguard was bitten in half by what's believed to be a Tiger Shark while riding waves off of Second Beach this weekend. Sikhanyiso Bangilizwe, of Port St. Johns, was sadly mangled by the aggressor, losing his right arm, shoulder, part of his back, and buttock. Poor dude was a member of the Wild Coast Guards, and off duty at the time of attack. They lost another lifeguard, Sibulele Masiza, to the jaws of a shark in January of 2007. A fellow lifeguard witnessed this year's attack, … [Read more...]
