Dane Reynolds’ perfect zero ride!

Now known as the best surfed zero point wave in a pro contest, many of us fans still feel burned by the call of interference against Dane on what would have been his heat winning wave. Down by 3.5 points, Dane took a end of heat left that may very well have been a 10.0 ride and certainly would have ushered him into Round 3.  Dane was taken out by Danny Wills, who intentionally forced an interference on Dane by dropping in behind the peak on a wave he and everyone else watching knew he would never … [Read more...]

Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – Fanning takes another, blah, blah, blah…

The Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal wrapped up on Tuesday at the world famous Supertubes, and we all know how it ended.  Mick won the event in steadily degrading conditions (especially considering the epic, mega barrels of the previous day), topping a charging Bede Durbidge, and officially turning the title race into a two-man show - Fanning vs. Parkinson.  Now let's take a look at how we got there and what it all means. For starters, lets consider the other potential title hopefuls as of the start … [Read more...]

The 2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka finally went live again on Monday. After a truncated start way back on the 5th of October, where the event only ran through the first eight heats of round 1, the nod was finally given to resume the event during what appears to be one of the best of the remaining days in the event window. Roughly translated - Mundaka isn't really putting out, but the boys decided to give her a go anyways. The biggest news on Monday was Joel Parkinson's early exit. Parko took home … [Read more...]

2009-hurley-pro-fanning-wins

The 2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles concluded on Saturday in inconsistent conditions, running through all of round four and the finals. While waves and conditions were less than stellar, the final day's performances were solid. Former world champ Mick Fanning returned to his machine like form, taking down all challengers and improving his chances in the title chase. Many think Mick was just focused on shutting down the other hopefuls, to help his good mate Parko have a clear run at the title. Unfortunately … [Read more...]

joel-parkinson-j-bay

Australia’s Joel Parkinson does it once again, taking his third win of the year and proving to all that 2009 is his year. Now even more solidly in the lead, by some 1400 plus points, Parko’s widening the gap on his way to his very first world title. While Kelly Slater looked poised to strike coming off of his win in Brazil and taking the highest heat score of the day in his round 2 heat, he bowed out in to California’s Taylor Knox in round 3, unable to get any solid waves. On a positive … [Read more...]

Let’s take a look at the winners and losers so far – The first heat of the event also proved the most lackluster with Timmy Reyes (USA) barely edging out Miky Picon (FRA) with a total heat score of 3.90 out of 20. Timmy was then edged out in Round 2 … [Read more...]

“The Present” in San Francisco–A Surf Movie Review

thepresent

March 27th was the first day of Spring in San Francisco. A hot sun angling toward the Pacific and the small tickle of wind on the brow demanded that everyone in the city leave their apartments and head for the nearest grassy park. These kinds of days are few and not to be wasted. With some tallboys in street cozies, a couple friends and I swaggered from the outer Richmond through Golden Gate Park to the Victoria Theater in the Mission to watch the premiere of Thomas Campbell's newest 16mm surf/art … [Read more...]
