Watch this video and tell me how these guys pull off those moves on logs in 15 foot surf! I would crap in my socks riding those waves with longboards! I probably would decapitated by the fin or something. I liked to think that longboards are for cross stepping and soul-sliding on those mellow summer days when the waves don't pack the punch needed for shortboarding. But this is just insane. Insanely entertaining, too. But insane. … [Read more...]
“Rip a shred!” Some dude killing it on a paddle board

This dude is kind of ripping. I don't think I've ever seen a stand up paddle surfer ride a wave this loose. I can't tell who it is, but it's obviously a local Hawaiian guy that isn't afraid of slappin' some @hole surfer upside the head with that plastic paddle. According to the Wikipedia page the first "modern" surfer to bring paddle surfing to the main land was some Vietnam veteran named Rick Thomas in 2000. Homeboy rode an 11 foot Munoz board with a Leleo Kinimaka paddle. I'm calling bullsh*t on … [Read more...]
Hell no, Coco Ho!
Scroll to 2:11 on the video above to see what all the fuss is about. It's the final day of the women's Reef Hawaiian Pro. Haleiwa is clean and rippable. In the dying minutes of the contest, Coco Ho is sitting in last place in the final, while her close friend, Carissa Moore is sitting in first. All that is standing between Carissa and victory is seven time World Champ, Layne Beachley, who is sitting in second and only needs an easily attainable (for her) 6.68 to take the lead. … [Read more...]
Reef Hawaiian Pro – Saturday recap

The WQS 6 Star Prime Reef Hawaiian Pro wrapped up on Saturday in chest high to slightly overhead waves in Haleiwa. Tahitian superstar, Michel Bourez took home top honors, taking down a field of frothing competitors and locking in his spot on the 2009 World Tour. Picking up this morning with heat 14, Round 4, the day got off to a great start with a bit of good ol' World Tour surfer dominance, seeing the advance of Dayyan Neve (AUS), Chris Ward (USA), Jordy Smith (ZAF), Rodrigo Dornelles … [Read more...]

Thursday's heats saw some stellar performances and big exits by top World Tour guys and top WQS hopefuls. With an expected return of waves thanks to a new northwest swell expected on Saturday, we should see the completion of the event on Saturday. Tune in early, as organizers will likely push for an early start to be sure to … [Read more...]
Reef Hawaiian Pro – Thursday, Men’s recap

After wrapping up the women's Reef Hawaiian Pro Thursday morning in clean, rippable conditions, the men's event was a go, running through the first 13 heats of Round 4. A storm front passed through later in the afternoon, bringing strong onshore winds which battered and chopped up the surf during the last few heats of the day. Thursday saw a strong display of high performance surfing, with the guys turning the chest to head high Haleiwa walls into a Lowers style event. Advancing through … [Read more...]
Reef Hawaiian Pro – Women’s finale Thursday recap

With cleaned up small but rippable conditions Thursday morning and swell expected to build throughout the day, the decision was made early this morning to wrap up the women's portion of the 2008 Reef Hawaiian Pro, before continuing on with final rounds of the men's event. This event is the last stop on the women's WQS and the first stop of the three women's events in the 2008 Van's Triple Crown of Surfing. The young and talented Hawaiian, Carissa Moore took a convincing win this morning when she dominated … [Read more...]
Reef Hawaiian Pro – live on Thursday!

After a few days of playing the waiting game, the Reef Hawaiian Pro is expected to go live on Thursday morning. The new northwest groundswell should be showing by daybreak, meaning we're likely to see the first heat in the water at 8:00 am local time. Some sizable waves should pump through throughout the day, making a perfect venue for the later heats of this first event of the 2008 Van's Triple Crown of Surfing. I'm betting on the men's event getting the go ahead, as the conditions will … [Read more...]
Reef Hawaiian Pro – Monday lay day

The WQS 6 Star Prime Reef Hawaiian Pro and the women's WQS 6 Star Reef Hawaiian Pro contests went on hold again Monday as another lay day was called. Small surf continued throughout the day on Monday as the contestants sit in waiting for the swell that is expected in the latter part of this week. Forcasts are calling for the swell to continue to diminish over the next couple of days, then rapidly fill in with a new NNW groundswell showing on Thursday. Friday may see an even bigger bump in size, … [Read more...]
