Aamion Goodwin got burned & injured at Pipe by some Kook

aamion-drop1

Kauai boy Aamion Goodwin copped one of the worst beatings amongst pros after being dropped in on at Pipeline.  As you can see in the various frame grabs, Aamion pulled in super deep into a big grinding left.  He tucked in, set his rail, and began charging through for the daylight at the far, far end of the tunnel.  Unfortunately for him, some unknown shoulder hopping douchebag thought it would be nice to drop in a few seconds later and take the elevator drop straight to the bottom.  Said douche … [Read more...]

Pipeline pre-quarters recap – Who’s out, who’s off & who’s still going

mick-fanning-2009-world-champ

After a few exciting days of competition at the 2009 Billabong Pipeline Masters, we've crowned our 2009 World Champ (Mick Fanning), closed in on our 2009 Vans Triple Crown Champ (CJ Hobgood or Joel Parkinson), finalized our rookie rankings (seeing Kekoa Bacalso at the head of the 2009 pack), and seen a huge number of dreams crushed and hopes dashed.  Let's explore the latter. Before the event has even finished, we can say goodbye to: - Marlon Lipke - who missed this event due to injury and … [Read more...]

Surfing: What It Means to be Dedicated

andy-irons-barrel

Consider the two pictures to the left. Which of these two men is more dedicated? Before you make an uninformed decision let me tell you a little about them. The first man in the unruly barrel is Andy Irons. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Andy grew up in warm Pacific waters surfing in a place that arguably has some of the heaviest waves on the planet. In this test of fire - or shall we say water - he emerged as one of the best surfers on the planet. His three world titles speak for themselves. Moving … [Read more...]

Someone’s at the door…

archy1

Matt Archbold has a new house in Hawaii, and this is the view from his front yard. Lucky bastard! If that doesn't look like the most rippable wave you've ever seen than you must be retarded, or like really, REALLY, into close outs. That right looks like with enough size it'll barrel too. If that was a laundry room this would be the view from the front door of my apartment, but it's a perfect peak so naturally it's reserved for North Shore legends like Archy and whatever hangers-on get to crash out … [Read more...]

“Rip a shred!” Some dude killing it on a paddle board

yikes

This dude is kind of ripping. I don't think I've ever seen a stand up paddle surfer ride a wave this loose. I can't tell who it is, but it's obviously a local Hawaiian guy that isn't afraid of slappin' some @hole surfer upside the head with that plastic paddle. According to the Wikipedia page the first "modern" surfer to bring paddle surfing to the main land was some Vietnam veteran named Rick Thomas in 2000. Homeboy rode an 11 foot Munoz board with a Leleo Kinimaka paddle. I'm calling bullsh*t on … [Read more...]

For those of you who can’t make it to Hawaii this winter

I'm sick of trying to pretend to be stoked for each and every friend who seems to be flying off to Hawaii for a few weeks this winter.  Hasn't the economy sh!t the bed?  Where the hell do all of these slacker friends of mine find the time off and money necessary to spend a few golden weeks on the North Shore? For those of you who are heading over there, enjoy yourselves, be safe, smart and courteous, and don't forget to tip your waitress.  Oh, and most importantly, don't forget to f@ck yourselves!  For … [Read more...]

Nathan Fletcher breaks the biggest bone in his body

nathan-f-injured

Last Monday at everyone's favorite North Shore reef, Pipeline, Nathan Fletcher suffered one of the most painful and unfortunate of breaks at one of the heaviest and most cherished of breaks.  He broke his femur in two places, requiring a full on Hawaiian water rescue.  In an unusual twist of fate, Nathan's break did not happen while getting slammed on the reef, or battered in the impact zone, or even pulling into some monster closeout.  Nathan was out for a freesurf after event organizers called … [Read more...]

Bruce Irons on the Cover of Free Surf

bruce1

Bruce Irons is getting completely kegged on the cover of Hawaii's Free Surf magazine. He's deep, too! You can tell from the equal amount white wash that whole section of lip came down at the same time, and he's not dragging hands to try to slow down, neither. He's all cool and sh!t, and this is nothing new for Bruce. Someone should have Photoshopped a little ham and cheese sandwich in one hand and a milkshake in the other. A beer, a bong - whatever. He's all chill in big barrels when most of us would … [Read more...]

Da Hui Backdoor Shootout

da-hui

Da Hui are kicking off their annual Pipeline event this week, with the start of the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.  This is not to be confused with Ron Jeremy's special event of nearly the same name.  The event, won last year by the guy who calls Pipeline his backyard, Jamie O'Brien, runs with a unique no elimination format.  The field, dominated by Hawaiian surfers, is governed by a three round format, where there are no eliminations and all surfers are judged on their best three waves.  As … [Read more...]

Where do we go from here?

Classic Tom Curren footage! With all the hype going around right now about Kelly Slater winning the Pipeline Masters on a 5'11" surfboard, and what that means for new surfboard designs. It was kind of strange to see this footage of Tom Curren charging the same exact wave on what seems a 10 foot surfboard in comparison. If someone would have told Tom Curren he could paddle out at Pipe on a 5'11", and still catch waves he would have told them they're insane. He never would have believed it, and neither … [Read more...]
