Mick Fanning takes the title – apparently plain vanilla lightning strikes twice

mick-fanning-over-the-falls

With a tip of his hat to mate and co-title chaser, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning has securely locked in his second World Title.  Protein cafes and weightrooms everywhere sung out in chorus, while I hung my head in angst. Maybe it's because I'm not Australian, or perhaps because I'm not a fan of robots, but I just can't feel good about this win. No doubt the guy is beyond in-form, at the top of his game, focused, unquestionably talented and has worked harder than anyone on tour to get to the winner's … [Read more...]

joel-parkinson-sunset-win

Joel Parkinson took home the win on Sunday at Sunset Beach on the final day of the 2009 O'Neill World Cup of Surfing, the second event in the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Though, the win doesn't put him any closer to winning his much deserved World Title, it does put him in a pretty good position to win this year's Triple Crown, especially when paired with his quarterfinal finish at the Reef Hawaiian Pro. Parko snuck by Sunny Garcia in the closing minutes of the final, leaving Sunny with … [Read more...]

Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – Fanning takes another, blah, blah, blah…

The Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal wrapped up on Tuesday at the world famous Supertubes, and we all know how it ended.  Mick won the event in steadily degrading conditions (especially considering the epic, mega barrels of the previous day), topping a charging Bede Durbidge, and officially turning the title race into a two-man show - Fanning vs. Parkinson.  Now let's take a look at how we got there and what it all means. For starters, lets consider the other potential title hopefuls as of the start … [Read more...]

2009-billabong-pro-mundaka-kelly-slater

After a truncated start way back on the 5th of October, where the event only ran through the first eight heats of round 1, the nod was finally given to resume the event during what appears to be one of the best of the remaining days in the event window. Roughly translated - Mundaka isn't really putting out, but the boys decided to give her a go anyways. The biggest news on Monday was Joel Parkinson's early exit. Parko took home … [Read more...]

2009-hurley-pro-fanning-wins

The 2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles concluded on Saturday in inconsistent conditions, running through all of round four and the finals. While waves and conditions were less than stellar, the final day's performances were solid. Former world champ Mick Fanning returned to his machine like form, taking down all challengers and improving his chances in the title chase. Many think Mick was just focused on shutting down the other hopefuls, to help his good mate Parko have a clear run at the title. Unfortunately … [Read more...]

Day three of the 2009 Hurley Pro kicked off with a exciting start on Wednesday, with clean but inconsistent conditions. Local Californian and fan favorite Dane Reynolds through a huge frontside reverse air to take the first win of the day over Australia's Ben Dunn.  Former World Tourer and fellow Californian, Rob Machado followed, shutting down the current world tour leader and man who would be king, Australia's Joel Parkinson. Kelly Slater posted the highest heat score of the day with an 18.50. He got an early 9.0 and backed it up just moments later with a 9.5, leaving his California cohort Rob Machado and Australia's Ace Buchan virtually helpless … [Read more...]

joel-parkinson-j-bay

Australia’s Joel Parkinson does it once again, taking his third win of the year and proving to all that 2009 is his year. Now even more solidly in the lead, by some 1400 plus points, Parko’s widening the gap on his way to his very first world title. While Kelly Slater looked poised to strike coming off of his win in Brazil and taking the highest heat score of the day in his round 2 heat, he bowed out in to California’s Taylor Knox in round 3, unable to get any solid waves. On a positive … [Read more...]

Joel Parkinson takes his third win of the year at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay

joel-wins-jbay

Yet another event win for Australia’s Joel Parkinson and it’s time to hop back on the Parko bandwagon. What, you say? You never got off? Well, Kelly Slater and Adriano de Souza distractions aside, Joel has increased his point lead once again, further separating himself from the pack of title contenders. Parko took down all comers on his way to victory, ousting Aussie wildcard, Heath Joske in round 2, fellow countryman, Kieren Perrow in round 3, California’s Bobby Martinez in the quarterfinals, … [Read more...]
