slater-jbay-2009

Holy shit, bru! You see that?!? J Bay was absolutely on fire on Tuesday for the second day of the 2009 Billabong Pro. The boys logged a few perfect 10 rides, and many more in the excellent range. King Kelly Slater was on again at J Bay, turning out the highest heat score of the day with his 18.84 to 9.34 victory over Australia’s Nic Muscroft. Dominating the inside barrel section, Slater was virtually unstoppable, posting a 9.57 and a 9.27, and finishing his heat with an additional two throw-out … [Read more...]

joel-parkinson-brazil-pensive

While we're all still basking in the glow of King Kelly Slater's return to form at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, little attention has been paid to some of the other movers and shakers on the 2009 World Tour.  Following Slater's triumphant return in Brazil, the rankings have shaken up a bit. For starters, let's take a look at the front ten.  Joel Parkinson (AUS) still sits comfortably in front, at number one in the rankings, with a slightly diminished point lead after his solid equal third … [Read more...]

Six reasons Kelly Slater is still relevant

slater-standing-alone

There's been a lot of negative press lately about our reigning world champ and his ability to continue winning. There's no question that he still remains one of the best surfers in the world, but nay sayers are suggesting that he's "over the hill", "has to stop riding self-shaped experimental boards", and "he's just not into competing any more". Despite his poor early results and all the negativity surrounding his 2009 campaign, I'm not ready to count Kelly Slater out just yet. Here are a few … [Read more...]

2009 World Tour rankings update following the Billabong Pro Teahupoo

Holy crappers! Teahupoo put on a hell of a show, despite the fact that it never got all that big. Joel Parkinson (AUS) still tops the list, though he stumbled in Round 3, followed by Taj Burrow (AUS), who jumped from 7th to 2nd. Mick Fanning’s ninth place finish dropped him into 3rd place, while C.J. Hobgood’s (USA) third quarterfinal finish bumped him to 4th in the rankings, and Adriano De Souza (BRA) continued his climb from 6th to 5th on the strength of his quarterfinal finish. Bobby … [Read more...]

slater-teahupoo

After more lay days than this addict can take without going crazy, the Billabong Pro Teahupoo finally resumed competition on Monday. With a three foot swell in the water and waves expectedly on the rise, the decision was made to wrap up Round 2 and jump into Round 3. Let's jump to the day's highlights: Current tour frontrunner, Joel Parkinson (AUS) posted a convincing victory over local wildcard, Heiarii Williams (PYF) in Round 2, but was knocked out in the next round by Taylor Knox (USA), … [Read more...]

It's still early in the 2009 season, but things have gotten a little more interesting following the completion of the 2009 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. The bloodshed at Bells rivaled that of the Gold Coast, with many of the top 10 falling in their very first heats at Bells. The new contest format proved challenging, yet successful, and has served as a real eye opener for traditional rankings leaders. Let's take a look at the updated rankings. All Australia was a buzz on Friday when Cooly kid, Joel Parkinson posted a big win in the final of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Joel took out frothing local wildcard, Adam Robertson in an exciting heat, held in perfect Bells conditions. On his way to the podium, Parko fought off an enormously talented assault. In his first heat of the event, Joel comboed Tahitian rookie, Michel Bourez. In Round 3, he did the same to fellow Aussie, Kai Otton. He followed those wins up by taking down Floridian … [Read more...]

Julian Wilson is auctioning off his pink surfboard he used during the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper. Julian rode all pink surfboards to help raise awareness for breast cancer. I'm not sure if this is the board he beat Kelly Slater on, because he ended up breaking two of these things. But he did have all the top pros autograph it so it's a collector's item regardless. All the proceeds will go directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Thing is, it's in Australia. So if you live in the States getting … [Read more...]

I came across an old throw-back mixed footage (some never before seen) clip of Bruce & Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, and Kelly Slater on the Runamuk blog. According to Runamuk it's some old used/un-used footage they've gathered from the last couple years filming. Well.. They put it together, threw in some Block Party, and posted it up on their blog. So go get a cold one, turn up the speakers, and enjoy! … [Read more...]
