5’9″ Bufo Fibre Jet – My Dream Quiver

bufo_fibre_jet

Here’s another board I’d like to try from this German volkssurfboardsmakerinman, BUFO. The design seems to imagine a board like the ones the guys on tour are riding these days; a little shorter than the normal short board, a little thicker and wider in the mid-section. As I said before, with guys like Marlon Lipke, Robbie Page and Tom Curren riding them, they can’t be half bad. And, once again, I’d be happy to be the first American test pilot/reviewer. Seriously… call me! (Editor's Note: … [Read more...]

Billabong Pro Teahupoo – Round 1 is done – Dane Reynolds and other favorites are out

andy-teahupoo

The "Dream Tour" has jumped back into action this week at the Billabong Pro Teahupoo.  Six days into the event, the contest has managed to crawl through Round 1 and the first 6 heats of Round 2, before calling yet another lay day on Thursday. Let’s take a look at the winners and losers so far – The first heat of the event also proved the most lackluster with Timmy Reyes (USA) barely edging out Miky Picon (FRA) with a total heat score of 3.90 out of 20. Timmy was then edged out in Round 2 … [Read more...]

Concurrent Quiksilver WQS events wrap up – Brazilians kick ass, take names

quiksilver-durban-estoril1

The 6 Star Prime Quiksilver Pro Durban and the 6 Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro completed in fine fashion this weekend, propelling two Brazilians up the current ASP World Qualifying Series ratings. Serious campaigner Jadson Andre took down the 2009 Quiksilver Pro Durban, while fellow countryman Alejo Muniz destroyed the local competition at the 2009 Estoril Quiksilver Pro. Jadson Andre took down a frothing Owen Wright (AUS) in a high scoring final down in South Africa at the 2009 Quiksilver Pro … [Read more...]

Catching up with Melvin Lipke

melvin-lipke-picture_10

I had the pleasure of meeting Melvin Lipke in the water this past summer, while casually heading out for a surf at my local not-so-secret spot. As luck would have it, my chance meeting with Melvin occurred just a few days after I had interviewed his big bro who was then in strong contention for a seat on the World Tour. For those unfamiliar with the young and extremely talented Melvin, he is the younger brother of 2009 World Tour surfer, Marlon Lipke. Like his big brother, he’s a Portuguese local … [Read more...]

Surfline weighs in on the 2009 World Tour newcomers

lewis-samuels

In his regular Power Rankings approach, Surfline’s Lewis Samuels weighed in recently on the newcomers to this year’s tour.  The outlook, if Lewis is to be believed, looks bleak.  He suggests that the newcomers and the returning World Tour surfers are an underwhelming group as a whole, referring to them as “a rag-tag crew of hyper-talented poor competitors, under-talented good competitors, and a bucketful of veteran burnouts who have just barely risen from the ashes”.  Not the kindest words … [Read more...]

Catching up with Melvin Lipke

melvin-lipke-02

Later this week we'll be bringing you the latest on one of the fastest rising young talents out of Europe, Melvin Lipke.  As the name suggests, Melvin is the younger brother of the ASP World Tour's newest Euro talent, Marlon Lipke.  Though born and raised in Portugal, Melvin and his brother Marlon both surf under the German flag of their parents, who are German transplants to southern Portugal. After sharing waves with Melvin and his crew of fellow team riders who were in the U.S. for a photo … [Read more...]

Wildcards chosen for 2009 World Tour

asp2

In addition to Marlon Lipke (DEU), whose wildcard we already announced, Cooly Kid, Dean Morrison (AUS) and Basque superstar, Aritz Aranburu, have received the remaining wildcards for the 2009 World Tour.  Marlon Lipke was gifted the honor, after finishing 16th on the WQS, and losing his second chance to qualify when his friend and fellow countryman, Tiago Pires (PRT), whose double qualification would have ensured Marlon a spot on tour, was forced sit out the Billabong Pipeline Masters due to a … [Read more...]

Marlon Lipke makes the 2009 World Tour!

marlon-estoril

I just received an email from Melvin Lipke, confirming that his big brother Marlon has been given a much deserved wildcard spot on the 2009 World Tour.  Following a stellar season on the World Qualifying Series, Marlon Lipke, everyone's favorite German national/Portugese local, found himself one spot shy of making the 2009 World Tour.  Marlon still had another chance to make the tour if his fellow countryman and World Tour surfer, Tiago Pires (PRT) could pull out a strong finish at Pipeline.  … [Read more...]
