Mick Fanning takes the title – apparently plain vanilla lightning strikes twice

mick-fanning-over-the-falls

With a tip of his hat to mate and co-title chaser, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning has securely locked in his second World Title.  Protein cafes and weightrooms everywhere sung out in chorus, while I hung my head in angst. Maybe it's because I'm not Australian, or perhaps because I'm not a fan of robots, but I just can't feel good about this win. No doubt the guy is beyond in-form, at the top of his game, focused, unquestionably talented and has worked harder than anyone on tour to get to the winner's … [Read more...]

Pipeline pre-quarters recap – Who’s out, who’s off & who’s still going

mick-fanning-2009-world-champ

After a few exciting days of competition at the 2009 Billabong Pipeline Masters, we've crowned our 2009 World Champ (Mick Fanning), closed in on our 2009 Vans Triple Crown Champ (CJ Hobgood or Joel Parkinson), finalized our rookie rankings (seeing Kekoa Bacalso at the head of the 2009 pack), and seen a huge number of dreams crushed and hopes dashed.  Let's explore the latter. Before the event has even finished, we can say goodbye to: - Marlon Lipke - who missed this event due to injury and … [Read more...]

Joel Parkinson wins the 2009 O’Neill World Cup of Surfing

joel-parkinson-sunset-win

Joel Parkinson took home the win on Sunday at Sunset Beach on the final day of the 2009 O'Neill World Cup of Surfing, the second event in the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Though, the win doesn't put him any closer to winning his much deserved World Title, it does put him in a pretty good position to win this year's Triple Crown, especially when paired with his quarterfinal finish at the Reef Hawaiian Pro. Parko snuck by Sunny Garcia in the closing minutes of the final, leaving Sunny with … [Read more...]

Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – Fanning takes another, blah, blah, blah…

The Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal wrapped up on Tuesday at the world famous Supertubes, and we all know how it ended.  Mick won the event in steadily degrading conditions (especially considering the epic, mega barrels of the previous day), topping a charging Bede Durbidge, and officially turning the title race into a two-man show - Fanning vs. Parkinson.  Now let's take a look at how we got there and what it all means. For starters, lets consider the other potential title hopefuls as of the start … [Read more...]

2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles – Fanning wins, Reynolds goes down fighting

2009-hurley-pro-fanning-wins

The 2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles concluded on Saturday in inconsistent conditions, running through all of round four and the finals. While waves and conditions were less than stellar, the final day's performances were solid. Former world champ Mick Fanning returned to his machine like form, taking down all challengers and improving his chances in the title chase. Many think Mick was just focused on shutting down the other hopefuls, to help his good mate Parko have a clear run at the title. Unfortunately … [Read more...]

Upsets abound in rounds 2 and 3 of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay

slater-jbay-2009

Holy shit, bru! You see that?!? J Bay was absolutely on fire on Tuesday for the second day of the 2009 Billabong Pro. The boys logged a few perfect 10 rides, and many more in the excellent range. King Kelly Slater was on again at J Bay, turning out the highest heat score of the day with his 18.84 to 9.34 victory over Australia’s Nic Muscroft. Dominating the inside barrel section, Slater was virtually unstoppable, posting a 9.57 and a 9.27, and finishing his heat with an additional two throw-out … [Read more...]

Six reasons Kelly Slater is still relevant

slater-standing-alone

There's been a lot of negative press lately about our reigning world champ and his ability to continue winning. There's no question that he still remains one of the best surfers in the world, but nay sayers are suggesting that he's "over the hill", "has to stop riding self-shaped experimental boards", and "he's just not into competing any more". Despite his poor early results and all the negativity surrounding his 2009 campaign, I'm not ready to count Kelly Slater out just yet. Here are a few … [Read more...]

Buy Julian Wilson’s surfboard on Ebay.

boedtlwbwkkgrhgookkuejllmtezqbju6btutcg_3

Julian Wilson is auctioning off his pink surfboard he used during the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper. Julian rode all pink surfboards to help raise awareness for breast cancer. I'm not sure if this is the board he beat Kelly Slater on, because he ended up breaking two of these things. But he did have all the top pros autograph it so it's a collector's item regardless. All the proceeds will go directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Thing is, it's in Australia. So if you live in the States getting … [Read more...]

Looky what I found – Runamuk Vintage Footage

123

I came across an old throw-back mixed footage (some never before seen) clip of Bruce & Andy Irons, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, and Kelly Slater on the Runamuk blog. According to Runamuk it's some old used/un-used footage they've gathered from the last couple years filming. Well.. They put it together, threw in some Block Party, and posted it up on their blog. So go get a cold one, turn up the speakers, and enjoy! … [Read more...]

Reef has a magazine?

reef_girls_marcella

So yeah, I'm not sure how I've managed to totally miss this, but apparently Reef has a magazine. And, just as shocking, apparently Marcella here has a face too? No I'm kidding, but if I took this picture away and then asked you 5 minutes from now what color hair she had, chances are you wouldn't remember. "It is in these hills that Juan Valdez and his trusty goat go to collect coffee beans in the morning" - Beavis & Butthead. So the magazine: it's actually really cool and their website has a … [Read more...]
