Aamion Goodwin got burned & injured at Pipe by some Kook

aamion-drop1

Kauai boy Aamion Goodwin copped one of the worst beatings amongst pros after being dropped in on at Pipeline.  As you can see in the various frame grabs, Aamion pulled in super deep into a big grinding left.  He tucked in, set his rail, and began charging through for the daylight at the far, far end of the tunnel.  Unfortunately for him, some unknown shoulder hopping douchebag thought it would be nice to drop in a few seconds later and take the elevator drop straight to the bottom.  Said douche … [Read more...]

Highwater: A Film Review of a Movie I Have Never Seen

Highwater is the newest film from the Brown family dynasty. Bruce Brown's son, Dana, is back on the surf beat after Step Into Liquid to document the final leg of the pro-surfing tour in Oahu, The Vans Triple Crown. The movie is set to release sometime in the Spring this year. The trailer is up. The tension is high. And Pontz has the only "insider" knowledge around. Have you been waiting for the greatest surf movie ever put on film? With the most epic barrels? The most epic wipeouts? The most … [Read more...]

Surfing: What It Means to be Dedicated

andy-irons-barrel

Consider the two pictures to the left. Which of these two men is more dedicated? Before you make an uninformed decision let me tell you a little about them. The first man in the unruly barrel is Andy Irons. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Andy grew up in warm Pacific waters surfing in a place that arguably has some of the heaviest waves on the planet. In this test of fire - or shall we say water - he emerged as one of the best surfers on the planet. His three world titles speak for themselves. Moving … [Read more...]

The New York Times Does Surfing

surfing-lake-superior1

I was surprised when I read The New York Times article, "Hanging 10 (Degrees) on Icy Lake Superior". It was an endearing article about surfers on Lake Superior which surprised me just because the NY Times decided to take the time to write about surfing. Outside of my total respect for anyone who will get into water while there is snow on the ground, I found The New York Times article quaint in its attempt to write about surfing. Quaint just like a little girl strutting into a room with her mother's … [Read more...]

For those of you who can’t make it to Hawaii this winter

I'm sick of trying to pretend to be stoked for each and every friend who seems to be flying off to Hawaii for a few weeks this winter.  Hasn't the economy sh!t the bed?  Where the hell do all of these slacker friends of mine find the time off and money necessary to spend a few golden weeks on the North Shore? For those of you who are heading over there, enjoy yourselves, be safe, smart and courteous, and don't forget to tip your waitress.  Oh, and most importantly, don't forget to f@ck yourselves!  For … [Read more...]

Da Hui Backdoor Shootout

da-hui

Da Hui are kicking off their annual Pipeline event this week, with the start of the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.  This is not to be confused with Ron Jeremy's special event of nearly the same name.  The event, won last year by the guy who calls Pipeline his backyard, Jamie O'Brien, runs with a unique no elimination format.  The field, dominated by Hawaiian surfers, is governed by a three round format, where there are no eliminations and all surfers are judged on their best three waves.  As … [Read more...]

The Eddie, still on standby, but plenty of time left to run

eddie-aikau

After seeing an incredible start to December, where huge surf was pounding Hawaii’s North Shore, all eyes were on The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau to get off the ground and running in the very first week of the holding period.   The season really began to heat up with the arrival of monster swell during the O’Neill World Cup, providing the competitors at Sunset Beach with real Hawaiian scale big waves.  While the crowds were at Sunset watching the second event in the Van’s Triple … [Read more...]

parkinson8836bbongpipe08kirstin_l

After a nailbiter of a final between the nine time World Champ, Kelly Slater (USA) and the 2008 rebooted Chris Ward (USA), Joel Parkinson was declared the winner of this year's Van's Triple Crown of Surfing title.  Joel put in an admirable performance throughout the entirety of the Triple Crown.  Joel made it to the Semifinals of the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, where he fell into a nightmarish heat, completely devoid of waves.  Finishing his heat with a total wave score of 3.90 wasn't … [Read more...]

Billabong Pipeline Masters – final day recap

billabong-pipe-masters3

The Billabong Pipeline Masters wrapped up on Friday in big, clean Pipe, with big barrels and dirty water.  With the usually clear blue water tainted a sooty greyish brown, the lineup looked more like Puerto Escondido.  The biggest news of the day:  Kelly Slater, our beloved nine time World Champ, just topped off an amazing World Tour season with being crowned the 2008 Pipeline Master.  How did everyone's favorite surfer get there?  Let's begin with Round 4. The action kicked off on Friday … [Read more...]

Kelly Slater takes the win at Pipeline!!!

Billabong Pipeline Masters

Winning five out of the first nine events this season crowned Kelly the 2008 World Champion.  But after skipping out of Brazil, Kelly wasn't about to rest on his laurels and let his better than 50% first place streak go away.  In typical Kelly style, he arrived for the event at the last minute, after chasing a swell with Andy Irons and a few others in the South Pacific, and proceeeded to dominate each and every one of his heats throughout the event.  Beginning in his first heat of the competition, … [Read more...]
