Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – Fanning takes another, blah, blah, blah…

The Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal wrapped up on Tuesday at the world famous Supertubes, and we all know how it ended.  Mick won the event in steadily degrading conditions (especially considering the epic, mega barrels of the previous day), topping a charging Bede Durbidge, and officially turning the title race into a two-man show - Fanning vs. Parkinson.  Now let's take a look at how we got there and what it all means. For starters, lets consider the other potential title hopefuls as of the start … [Read more...]

Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – envious observations from afar

After several lay days, the Rip Curl Search Portugal finally went live, and has now run through all of rounds one and two. Let’s take a look at who’s making waves and who's already on the flight to Hawaii. Big winners: Owen Wright – cut his teeth on Kekoa Bacalso in round one, then killed Slater’s 2009 title hopes in round two with an exciting aerial performance. Mick Fanning – I don’t have to like him, but it’s hard to knock his ability to perform. He fought a close battle … [Read more...]

jadson-andre

As the 6 Star Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing is up and running this week, we’re now clearly in the back half of the season. Three more WQS events down and we’ve seen more movement amongst the front-runners. This latest update is all about Brazil. Brazilians won the two back to back 6 Star events, with 15 year old Gabriel Medina taking the 6 Star Maresia Surf International in Santa Catarina, Brazil, followed by Neco Padaratz’s triumphant return when he took the 6 Star Coca Cola Pro in Saquarema, … [Read more...]

Rip Curl Pro Search lands in Peniche, Portugal

supertubos

After much speculation (and multiple behind the scenes confirmation to DS), the ASP officially went public on Tuesday with their announcement of the location of the latest installment of the increasingly popular Rip Curl Pro Search contest.  Following a successful run in Bali last year, a thrilling adventure in Chile in 2007, an other worldly contest in Mexico in 2006 and a world class event in Reunion in 2005, the decision was made to host the 2009 event in Peniche, Portugal. Running from October … [Read more...]

Another WQS contest gets the axe

axe

It was bound to happen sooner or later, and now a major event has been canceled due to the state of the economy. The 6 Star Buondi Billabong Pro, which was to be held in Ericeira, Portugal from September 15th to 20th, has become the global recession’s latest victim. Sandwiched between a number of big point events and with negotiations on dates and sponsorship coming to a standstill, the decision was made to put the event on ice for 2009. This cancellation comes on the heels of the downgrading … [Read more...]

quiksilver-durban-estoril1

The 6 Star Prime Quiksilver Pro Durban and the 6 Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro completed in fine fashion this weekend, propelling two Brazilians up the current ASP World Qualifying Series ratings. Serious campaigner Jadson Andre took down the 2009 Quiksilver Pro Durban, while fellow countryman Alejo Muniz destroyed the local competition at the 2009 Estoril Quiksilver Pro. Jadson Andre took down a frothing Owen Wright (AUS) in a high scoring final down in South Africa at the 2009 Quiksilver Pro … [Read more...]

Catching up with Melvin Lipke

melvin-lipke-picture_10

I had the pleasure of meeting Melvin Lipke in the water this past summer, while casually heading out for a surf at my local not-so-secret spot. As luck would have it, my chance meeting with Melvin occurred just a few days after I had interviewed his big bro who was then in strong contention for a seat on the World Tour. For those unfamiliar with the young and extremely talented Melvin, he is the younger brother of 2009 World Tour surfer, Marlon Lipke. Like his big brother, he’s a Portuguese local … [Read more...]
