Metaphor time! If getting barreled is the closest thing to an orgasm, than this is the closest a man will ever get to a woman's. It's common knowledge that a female orgasm last much longer compared to a Male's, and to put this in layman's terms, a man's peak would be compared to a quick tube at the pier. Where a woman's time in the "Spirit World" would be more like Ozzie Wright's ridiculously long barrel in Indo, click here. Get my drift? That is the difference between what's happening inside … [Read more...]
Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – Fanning takes another, blah, blah, blah…
The Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal wrapped up on Tuesday at the world famous Supertubes, and we all know how it ended. Mick won the event in steadily degrading conditions (especially considering the epic, mega barrels of the previous day), topping a charging Bede Durbidge, and officially turning the title race into a two-man show - Fanning vs. Parkinson. Now let's take a look at how we got there and what it all means. For starters, lets consider the other potential title hopefuls as of the start … [Read more...]
Rip Curl Pro Search Portugal – envious observations from afar
After several lay days, the Rip Curl Search Portugal finally went live, and has now run through all of rounds one and two. Let’s take a look at who’s making waves and who's already on the flight to Hawaii. Big winners: Owen Wright – cut his teeth on Kekoa Bacalso in round one, then killed Slater’s 2009 title hopes in round two with an exciting aerial performance. Mick Fanning – I don’t have to like him, but it’s hard to knock his ability to perform. He fought a close battle … [Read more...]
Rip Curl Pro Search lands in Peniche, Portugal

After much speculation (and multiple behind the scenes confirmation to DS), the ASP officially went public on Tuesday with their announcement of the location of the latest installment of the increasingly popular Rip Curl Pro Search contest. Following a successful run in Bali last year, a thrilling adventure in Chile in 2007, an other worldly contest in Mexico in 2006 and a world class event in Reunion in 2005, the decision was made to host the 2009 event in Peniche, Portugal. Running from October … [Read more...]
Review of the Rip Curl H-Bomb – Best wetsuit ever
Like all cold water surfers, when announcements and teasers first surfaced regarding the H-Bomb, I turned the internet upside down, clamoring for more information on the suit. Proposed release dates were repeatedly pushed back, as I and others around the world anxiously awaited the suit's arrival. Meanwhile, Rip Curl was putting years of serious research and development into the suit, sending teamriders to the coldest corners of the globe to test the suits. The concept seemed like such a natural … [Read more...]

It's still early in the 2009 season, but things have gotten a little more interesting following the completion of the 2009 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. The bloodshed at Bells rivaled that of the Gold Coast, with many of the top 10 falling in their very first heats at Bells. The new contest format proved challenging, yet successful, and has served as a real eye opener for traditional rankings leaders. Let's take a look at the updated rankings. For starters, Joel Parkinson's back-to-back victories … [Read more...]

All Australia was a buzz on Friday when Cooly kid, Joel Parkinson posted a big win in the final of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Joel took out frothing local wildcard, Adam Robertson in an exciting heat, held in perfect Bells conditions. On his way to the podium, Parko fought off an enormously talented assault. In his first heat of the event, Joel comboed Tahitian rookie, Michel Bourez. In Round 3, he did the same to fellow Aussie, Kai Otton. He followed those wins up by taking down Floridian … [Read more...]
Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach – Round 2 upsets continue with more top seed falling
After taking a lay day to wait for better conditions (and to allow all of the surfers a chance to recover from the Round 2 carnage on Tuesday), the 2009 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach went back into action on Thursday. Unfortunately for the remaining Round 2 seeds, only one out of the four remaining top seeds advanced on Thursday. Taj Burrow’s (AUS) untimely exit marked the first upset of the day, when he was taken out by injury replacement surfer, Jay “Bottle” Thompson (AUS). Tim Reyes (USA) … [Read more...]
Deviations in California Surf Culture

Whether the blame lies on the inherent nature of stereotyping or on the media-washed portrayal of subcultures, a closer look at any sub-community reveals deviations within, so great sometimes, that it startles the senses. "How did I ever swallow such a blatantly obvious apocryphal story?" The surfing community with its own set of cultural signs and signals is no different. The surf community in Southern California has its own unique surf culture that lives and breathes its own unique signs. With … [Read more...]
