Joel Parkinson took home the win on Sunday at Sunset Beach on the final day of the 2009 O'Neill World Cup of Surfing, the second event in the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Though, the win doesn't put him any closer to winning his much deserved World Title, it does put him in a pretty good position to win this year's Triple Crown, especially when paired with his quarterfinal finish at the Reef Hawaiian Pro. Parko snuck by Sunny Garcia in the closing minutes of the final, leaving Sunny with … [Read more...]

Where do we go from here?

Classic Tom Curren footage! With all the hype going around right now about Kelly Slater winning the Pipeline Masters on a 5'11" surfboard, and what that means for new surfboard designs. It was kind of strange to see this footage of Tom Curren charging the same exact wave on what seems a 10 foot surfboard in comparison. If someone would have told Tom Curren he could paddle out at Pipe on a 5'11", and still catch waves he would have told them they're insane. He never would have believed it, and neither … [Read more...]

Sunny Garcia Is Out!

sunnygarcia2

With a total shocker of a losing heat, Sunny Garcia was eliminated today from the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing in nearly perfect Sunset Beach. Out as well are his dreams of qualifying for the tour again. Sunny had a nine point ride early on but couldn't find the needed 2.5 in the dying minutes after Nic Muscroft bumped him out of the advancing spot. Unfortunately for Sunny he had snapped a board around the 5 minute mark, and wasted the much-needed time getting on a back-up. I'm sure he's pretty bummed … [Read more...]

Two Outta Three Gudauskas Brothers Ain’t Bad

gudauskas_d5750oneill08rowland_l

It was good to be a Gudauskas brother on Tuesday... if you were one of the twins that is.  Twin brothers, Patrick and Dane Gudauskas went huge on Tuesday at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach.  This California duo managed to take home the biggest wave of the day (Dane) and highest ranking wave of the day (Patrick).  Unfortunately, younger brother Tanner was lost in the shuffle, being ousted from his Round 4 heat by his big brother Patrick, when Patrick fearlessly threaded through … [Read more...]

Roxy Pro 2008 finals

For your viewing pleasure, I give you the final heat of the 2008 Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach.  As you can tell by the video, Sunset dropped considerably on Monday, compared to its massive size over the weekend.  The significant drop in size made for very contestable waves for the ladies where snaps and top turns replaced the big bottom turns and broad arcs we saw earlier in the competition. The high level of competition is apparent in the video, where you can see the event winner, Steph Gilmore … [Read more...]
