What not to do with surfboards on top of your car

WIPEOUT!!! A lot of people are idiots. Even surfers. This guy is a great example of a surfer who didn't get his daily dose (let your imagination figure it out...). If I was that guy, the first thing that would go through my mind as the car started tipping is "Oh sh!t!!! The surfboards!!!" Forget the fact that his car is probably somewhat screwed, the boards would have been my first, and last thought. And even though the crash itself was gnarly, the worst part (yes, I know it was funny) was … [Read more...]

Home Depot Surfboard Project – A surfboard shaping story – Part 1

Rough shape

There is a shared ritual for anyone who puts their hands on a surfboard for the first time. First, you'll feel the smooth contouring of the rails, then sight down the stringer, dance our finger tips over any bottom contours, flip it over a few times and then ask: "How’d they make this?" These days, all you see are cookie cutter, CNC replicas of surfboards being mass-produced and sold at the same price they always have been, if not more expensive than they were! I’m certainly not opposed to this … [Read more...]

Ever wondered how a machine shapes a surfboard?

This video gives a quick peak about just how your precious little surfboard was probably shaped, hopefully in the United States and America! It is pretty cool to see the machine in action, and the video touts the benefits of such an investment. Dudes, it just makes sense! Starting at $25,000, these shapers can even shave a little piece of the stringer for ya. … [Read more...]

Chuy Reyna on Fire(wire)!

Surfing

I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Chuy Reyna,  frothing former California pro surfer and current marketing director over at Firewire Surfboards.  To hear Chuy tell it, he's had an amazing life filled with stoke and success, and he's landed a dream job over at Firewire.  Drop in and meet the legend. What age did you start surfing, and where? I was 5 years old when I learned to surf in Oceanside. I have 6 older brothers who were surfers, 3 of them were really into it, so they … [Read more...]

Kelly is at it again

31-512x682

No, he's not dominating the tour (at least, so far...), he's making boards with crazy recipes one would use to make special yogurts (yummy)! This time, he's fusing the natural shape of a manta ray with his recent designs such as the Wizard Sleeve and the Tangent. How does this thing ride? I have no idea... and not even Surfer Mag knows!  But I sure do really want to try it out! One of these days, Kelly's gonna come up with something that will change the way surfboards are made as much as the … [Read more...]

Surfing an eco-friendly wave of green.

alaia-tomwegenersurfboards

The foam board revolution has been hailed one of the grandest changes in the surfboard's history since the invention of the fin. But after many decades of buying and using these surfboards, many of our eco-conscious brethren have realized that they have been hypocrites. We needed to change the materials used in shaping and glassing our precious boards.  Firstly, the foam itself is being wasted every time a board is snapped at Pipeline, meaning that more energy is being used to create more blanks … [Read more...]

When gear strikes back!!! Part 3.

2149810139_ce891cd748

Surfing, as we all know, was started by the ingenious Polynesians, who figured out how to ride waves. But surfboards were still huge and bulky, and it took many generations to finally perfect (or is it?) the shape that we know and love today. The polyeurethane board with a foam core, moderate rocker, and those things that poke out the bottom called... ... Fins! Yes, they let you turn. Yes, without them, surfing as we know it would not be possible, but even though they were the best innovation … [Read more...]

Green Room Surfboards… Super stoked! Part 2

dsc00427

I've been waiting in anticipation for the fateful day that would present me with the new board... Thursday was The Day. I went to the shaping bay to pick up my board. The board is epoxy, made by Green Room Surfboards, (who makes some of the best epoxy boards ever.) They had placed it in a "baking room" after the glassing job was done. When the shaper handed me the board, my hair stood up on end, 'cause holding my new, warm board felt as good as putting on clothes straight out if the dryer. It … [Read more...]

Selling pop-outs are no better than selling “new” used boards

picture2-2

This person says that he can't stand people who sell used boards but say that they're new because they were only used once. Well I can't stand that this guy is saying this while turning around and selling NSP's saying that they're a good deal. Yeah, a good deal if you plan on showing off to your non-surfing friends and showing them this board leaning against the garage wall. "Yeah, I surf! NSP is a big brand! They make good epoxy boards!" Correction: good epoxy POP-OUT boards, which aren't … [Read more...]

Boards get cold too!

picture1-1

Attention! If you have ever thought that leaving your board out in the cold, could in no way be damaging to said board, then you have been lied to and deceived to and you may be liable for compensation and/or lawsuit rewards. Just call the law offices of Ubechur Asse and - Alright, you got me. There is no law office of Ubecher Asse (I hope you get it... think "Madgab"), and you are not liable for any money rewards, but there is truth behind this. Okay, so you think that since you surf with … [Read more...]
