surfer-magazine-50-years

We love Surfer Magazine, they have brought us so much good surfer sh!t over the years.  For example, what surfer had the best porn name you ask?!  Female winner: Daize Shayne.  Male winner: Nick Wood (with Damien Hardman, Wingnut, Shane Stoneman close runner-ups).  That was from July 1998 and we get to relive some other great ones in their new book that celebrates 50 years in biz.  Congrats, Surfer Mag!! Some other great stories over the years featured in the book: Bad Surf Trips: … [Read more...]

Wave Pool Found in Ocean off Africa

I had the very very long pleasure of watching the new ...Lost 5'5" x 19 1/4": Redux surf epic. As with anything that runs on and on for six hours, it was hard to maintain focus. After watching plenty of barrels and plenty of airs, the movie slowly lulled me into a hypnotic state of dreariness. Watching, but not really seeing anything, I stared and stared as surfer after surfer punted 360 airs. I might as well have been watching the growth of General Sherman since the birth of Christ. But, then … [Read more...]

Surfer Magazine Late to the Party

surfer_the_wall

Not that I want to diminish Surfer Magazine in their 50th year - but sometimes it just needs to be said. Even said loud and clear for the world to hear. Especially when it concerns Pontz. So I have scrambled atop my dailystoke.com soap box and I am ready to shout: "Surfer Magazine! Stop riding on my coat tails." This is frustrating. For one, Surfer Magazine has a much larger and grander soap box to pontificate from. "Surfer Magazine has the largest worldwide distribution of any surf publication. … [Read more...]

On Advertising Surfer, or The Most Boring Article Ever

billabong-ad

As tends to be the case with most great revelations, the idea for this article came to me while sitting on the toilet. I was flipping through Surfer and was struck by how many pages I had to flip through before I got to any meaningful content or articles. Everything else was advertisements. How many ads do I have to not look at to read Surfer? How many ads does Surfer need to run in order to print a magazine? I needed an answer, and I knew my curiosity would not be satiated by suppositions and … [Read more...]

Watch out Surfer Magazine, there’s a new fantasy surfing game in town

fantasy-action-sports-surf-league

Fantasy surfing nerds rejoice!  Up until yesterday, I was totally Surfer Magazine's Fantasy Surfer bitch.  That all changed when the Fantasy Action Sports League announced it's own variety of the fantasy surfing game.  The folks at FASL are putting $30,000 in prizes up for grabs for their 2009 ASP World Tour fantasy surfing league, with more money on offer for single event top placements than you would find at some pro-am events.  I'm talking about $1,000 for the highest ranked player for … [Read more...]

New surfing magazine!

new

There's a new magazine out, and you can check out "theBombsurf" website by clicking here. It's no Transworld or Surfer Magazine by any means, but it's still new and in the process of putting things together. The best part is they will send you a free copy - all you pay is the post! They've also got a link to a pretty interesting Shane Dorian interview about the Waimea Bay take off spot under "Community News". Bombshell of the week is another website plus. So go check it out! Yesterday they had … [Read more...]

RIP Surf Guide Magazine: Satirical Fables and Surfing Babies

surfing-baby

This baby first caught my eye because he is totally rad. This is a sweet magazine cover. Sure, somebody getting shacked somewhere I'll probably never go is awesome, too. But a baby in diapers with a surfboard--that makes me laugh and gets me pumped. Not to mention the retro love you feel from those golden locks and paunch. Don't deny it; you feel it too. After pulling my eyes away from the picture, I began reading about the life and death of Surf Guide Magazine. A surf magazine published first … [Read more...]

Taylor Knox replaces Kelly Slater on the totem pole.

cover2

Rip Curl took care of business on their website, and put team rider Taylor Knox on Surfer Magazines "Most Influential Surfers Of The Year" cover with Mick. Kelly Slater is out, and Taylor Knox is in there instead! It's a complete joke of course, but it's almost scary how much that looks like Taylor Knox right now with his frohawk, and trademark handlebar mustache. The new cover was found in Rip Curl's pit boss, Matt Griggs, bathroom floor laying next to the toilet. The new cover was appropriately … [Read more...]

Donavon Frankenreiter interview with DailyStoke.com

donavon frankenreiter interview

"Can I get you a beer?" And with that, Donavon Frankenreiter started our interview talking about surfing and music at New York's Highland Ballroom, where Frankenreiter was touring promoting his new album Pass it Around. Frankenreiter has been on the road for three weeks, and while he's clearly stoked to be on tour, touring does take its toll. Touring means time away from the water, and time away from family. "It's tough, man," said Frankenreiter, "but I've been away for as much as seven weeks at … [Read more...]
