If you're a surfing filmmaker or know of one, we're looking for surfing movies to review. We've been contacted by a number of great filmmakers, and have done reviews of One Track Mind, the new film by Chris Malloy, Chasing the Dream, a story about the surfing team at Huntington Beach High School among other films. More movies are on the way. That said, we've also found some beauts, like Surfing 50 States, and we'll be profiling this new and creative movie soon. So if you've got something in the can … [Read more...]
Between the Lines – Surfing Movie Review

Surfing is often an escape from whatever may be happening in your life, back on land. Every surfer knows the feeling of leaving everything behind while the sun is shining, waiting for a set to roll in. Imagine, however, that what you're escaping through surfing is the Vietnam War. Indeed, despite the carnage around them, American soldiers in Vietnam got the chance to surf some waves. This is the story told in Between The Lines, a surfing documentary recently released and directed by Ty Ponder and … [Read more...]

Surfing 50 States – A Q&A with the Surfer-Directors
Surfing 50 States is a brand new surfing flick with an original concept - two Aussies fly to California, get sponsored by Hurley, and proceed to travel all 50 states in search of surf. Surf in Arkansas? Yup, in some way, shape or form. The movie rocks - good on Hurley for making it happen. Aside from our movie review of Surfing 50 States, we caught up with Jonno and Stefan to talk about making the film. DailyStoke.com: You were in the US for six months, didn't pay for lodging at all, but stayed … [Read more...]
Musica Surfica – Surfing Movie Review

There is a reason why Musica Surfica won the New York Surf Film Festival. Indeed, Musica Surfica is unlike any other surfing documentary you've ever seen (or heard, to be more precise.) In a very tight 45 minutes, Musica Surfica tells the stories of musicians and surfers - each artists in their own craft. There are two story lines that splice together in a way that makes this surfing film distinct from any other. The first is the story of the artistic director of Australian Chamber Orchestra, Richard … [Read more...]
Under the Sun – Surfing movie review
Under the Sun, directed by Cyrus Sutton, is a one-of-a-kind surfing flick that centers on the distinctions between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast in Australia (as well as the not-so-distinct features.) The Gold Coast is a sort of photocopy of SoCal and is the hub of the Association of Surfing Professionals with all that comes along with it. Byron Bay, only an hour south down the coast, is the soul surfer headquarters of Australia. The movie tells the story of the clash (of sorts) between these two … [Read more...]
Single Fin: Yellow and One California Day – meet Jason Baffa

Normally when surfers make a trip that requires the participating of the airlines, they bring their quiver along with them, packed in board bags wrapped just so, such that airlines like Delta don’t wreck them. In the case of Single Fin: Yellow, a film by Jason Baffa, the board itself did the travel, courtesy of a solid coffin from Santa Monica Hard Case. We interviewed Jason Baffa about his experiences on Single Fin: Yellow and its off-spring, One California Day, which he produced with co-conspirator, … [Read more...]
Jason Baffa – a surfer’s filmmaker

Any serious surfer can appreciate the beauty of Jason Baffa’s films, Single Fin: Yellow and One California Day. The scenery is stunning, the surfing is fantastic (and yet calming at the same time), and the story told is as important as The Endless Summer. In the case of One California Day, a film he shot with Mark Jeremias, it is perhaps even more important, as Baffa and Jeremias are the first modern-day filmmakers to take a fresh look at real surfers and real surfing in California. That grainy … [Read more...]
Out There Surfing Movie – Movie Review
Out There is a movie released in 2008 that mashes up surfing and the ocean environment. It's an impressive collaboration between the movies' sponsors (including Surfrider) and Teton Gravity Research, the production company. Shot on location in Southern Chile, the Galapagos, Tahiti, California, including Trestles, El Salvador and Hawaii, the film covers a broad swath of endangered surf spots around the world. We're not just talking pretty waves here, we're talking pretty waves fed by rivermouths … [Read more...]
