Hurley Pro at Trestles – Slater surges, Taj falls

2009-hurley-pro-slater-day-1

The 2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles got off to an exciting start on Sunday in small and textured conditions. Opting to use the old contest format with all surfers surviving through the first round, there were no shocking first round upsets, but there were a few surprise wins. Kelly Slater posted the highest heat score of the day with an 18.50. He got an early 9.0 and backed it up just moments later with a 9.5, leaving his California cohort Rob Machado and Australia's Ace Buchan virtually helpless … [Read more...]

slater-jbay-2009

Holy shit, bru! You see that?!? J Bay was absolutely on fire on Tuesday for the second day of the 2009 Billabong Pro. The boys logged a few perfect 10 rides, and many more in the excellent range. King Kelly Slater was on again at J Bay, turning out the highest heat score of the day with his 18.84 to 9.34 victory over Australia’s Nic Muscroft. Dominating the inside barrel section, Slater was virtually unstoppable, posting a 9.57 and a 9.27, and finishing his heat with an additional two throw-out … [Read more...]

Six reasons Kelly Slater is still relevant

slater-standing-alone

There's been a lot of negative press lately about our reigning world champ and his ability to continue winning. There's no question that he still remains one of the best surfers in the world, but nay sayers are suggesting that he's "over the hill", "has to stop riding self-shaped experimental boards", and "he's just not into competing any more". Despite his poor early results and all the negativity surrounding his 2009 campaign, I'm not ready to count Kelly Slater out just yet. Here are a few … [Read more...]

2009 World Tour rankings update following the Billabong Pro Teahupoo

Holy crappers! Teahupoo put on a hell of a show, despite the fact that it never got all that big. Joel Parkinson (AUS) still tops the list, though he stumbled in Round 3, followed by Taj Burrow (AUS), who jumped from 7th to 2nd. Mick Fanning’s ninth place finish dropped him into 3rd place, while C.J. Hobgood’s (USA) third quarterfinal finish bumped him to 4th in the rankings, and Adriano De Souza (BRA) continued his climb from 6th to 5th on the strength of his quarterfinal finish. Bobby … [Read more...]

Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach – Round 2 upsets continue with more top seed falling

After taking a lay day to wait for better conditions (and to allow all of the surfers a chance to recover from the Round 2 carnage on Tuesday), the 2009 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach went back into action on Thursday. Unfortunately for the remaining Round 2 seeds, only one out of the four remaining top seeds advanced on Thursday. Taj Burrow’s (AUS) untimely exit marked the first upset of the day, when he was taken out by injury replacement surfer, Jay “Bottle” Thompson (AUS). Tim Reyes (USA) … [Read more...]

Taj Burrow knows how to throw a good party

What's a party like at Taj Burrow's house, you might ask? Oh, you know...tons of hot chicks pulling up their dresses. Yum! Yum! Being a professional surfer looks fun, doesn't it? Taj Burrow threw a little shindig to ring in the New Year with a little debauchery sprinkled on top. Booze, booze, and more booze, let's party!! "Hi, I'm Taj, and I rip." … [Read more...]

Tom Cruise better watch out! Andy Irons is gunning for Hollywood.

Localism sucks! Especially when gnarly guys like Ben Stiller are the ones enforcing it. After Ben punks out Keith and Dan Malloy, Taj Burrow, and a young little wahine. It's takes Andy Irons to put Ben in his place. This clip is classic, and it's a must see! … [Read more...]

Enough is enough! Another fatal shark attack in South Africa

A 25 year old lifeguard was bitten in half by what's believed to be a Tiger Shark while riding waves off of Second Beach this weekend. Sikhanyiso Bangilizwe, of Port St. Johns, was sadly mangled by the aggressor, losing his right arm, shoulder, part of his back, and buttock. Poor dude was a member of the Wild Coast Guards, and off duty at the time of attack. They lost another lifeguard, Sibulele Masiza, to the jaws of a shark in January of 2007. A fellow lifeguard witnessed this year's attack, … [Read more...]

Kustom Shoes if offering up $50,000 dollars to the dude that punts the biggest air. That's a pretty fat pay check for one maneuver! There's basically no rules or guidelines, just whoever pulls the biggest, most innovated air, gets the dough dough. Do you like to blow through sections, and punt high hopes? You can enter here.
