Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro take another day off on the Gold Coast

quikpro094

The first contests of 2009 for the men’s and women’s World Tours were put on hold once again on Wednesday, as waves failed to pick up on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. Last year’s World Champ and defending event winner, Kelly Slater got off to a good start this year, claiming his Round 1 victory on Saturday with an almost landed, huge alley-oop on his opening wave, followed up by a ridiculous lay back gouge. He topped his heat, while riding a self-shaped 5’4”. Always raising … [Read more...]

Roxy Pro, Gold Coast – Round 1 recap

roxypro09

The newbies dominated Round 1 of the 2009 Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast presented by LG Mobile.  The ladies finally saw action on Monday, day 3 of the waiting period, when the competition was moved from Snapper Rocks to nearby Duranbah. Winning their Round 1 matchups were Kiwi, Paige Hareb; rookie Hawaiian stunner, Alana Blanchard; reigning World Champ and reigning event champ, Steph Gilmore; star Aussie rookie, Sally Fitzgibbons; Aussie, Chelsea Hedges; and rookie Brazilian hottie, Bruna Schmitz, … [Read more...]

Don’t forget to get your Fantasy Surfer picks in!

fantasy-surfer2

Fantasy Surfer nerds, get your trade on!  While the trials for the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast are running live at Snapper Rocks as I type this, we're quickly approaching the deadline for getting your Fantasy Surfer picks in.  The final wildcards for the event are falling into place, but I've already picked my men's team, and I'll finalize my women's team when the women's trials wrap up.  As in all things, past performance does not guarantee repeat results, but a few of the guys and gals … [Read more...]

Alana Blanchard talks to Surfer Mag – ASP Addict gets jealous and gives Surfer the stinkeye

alana350

While her drop dead gorgeous looks are what grabs everyone’s attention first, her amazing surfing has made her the true star that she is. In her first year on the women’s World Qualifying Series, in a half-hearted run at qualifying, Alana Blanchard managed to top the competition and win a seat on the 2009 Women’s World Tour. Surfer Mag got the interview, which they ran on the Women’s World Tour Fantasy Surfer website. Alana had a stellar freshman year run on the WQS, making a few semifinals … [Read more...]

Women get some Fantasy Surfer love

fantasy-surfer1

Somehow this escaped my attention while I was spending hours tinkering with my Fantasy Surfer team last season. The ladies also have a Fantasy Surfer game online, presented by Surfer Magazine. No longer will I have to solely fantasize about representing teams of surfing men. Now I can fantasize about female surfers too. Mmmmmmm…. female… surfers. I just have to be careful not to select my team based on hotness alone. Buying and selling is now open for the first event of the season, the Roxy … [Read more...]

Women’s 2009 Movistar Pro – Saturday recap

womens-movistar-pro1

We've completed the second day in the event window for the first event of 2009 for the Women's World Qualifying Series, the 2 Star, Movistar Pro presented by Rip Curl and Samsung, and our Quarterfinalists are selected.  The action has been hot on the beaches of San Bartolo, Peru, a short drive south of Lima, where the competition has run in clean, waist to chest high waves. Ah, the beauty of being misinformed!  Contrary to what I incorrectly announced earlier this week, the Women's Movistar … [Read more...]

Billabong Pro Maui final, or why it sucks to be on the Dream Tour light

We all know that there's less glamour, glory, fame and money is being a female professional surfer.  On contest money alone, the guys earn more than three times what the ladies do in any given event.  While this seems far from fair given the incredible number of women and girls taking to the sport in recent years, event organizers will quickly point out that the numbers are more than fair, given that there are only 17 surfers on the Women's World Tour, while there are 45 surfers on the men's World … [Read more...]

2009 ASP Women’s World Tour finally locked in

womens-asp3

Following up on my earlier report on the state of the 2009 Women's World Tour top 17, we have received final confirmation from the great folks at the ASP regarding the locked in list.  Chelsea Hedges has been awarded the ASP Wildcard slot, after finishing at 7th in the world in 2007, then taking off the 2008 season to give birth.  While this is great news for Chelsea, it is bad news for Julia De La Rosa (PER), who was hoping to take the injury wildcard after missing the Hawaiian leg of the tour … [Read more...]

2009 ASP Women’s World Tour top 17

womens-asp2

The Billabong Pro Maui is a wrap, bringing an end to the ASP Women’s World Tour’s 2008 season.  Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) came out on top, winning the last event of the year and the Triple Crown title, after having already won her second consecutive World Title.  Though Steph continued to stomp her authority on the World Tour, the bigger news was the near completion of the 2009 World Tour lineup.    Returning to the tour for 2009 via their performance on the 2008 World Tour are our World … [Read more...]
